G'day from Melbourne!!!! Got up stupidly early this morning and said farewell to Sydney. My flight was to Avalon airport (didn't realise Melbourne had 2 airports - greedy!) and we landed in the middle of nowhere with nothing for miles. Had to get a shuttle bus into the city and then a tram to my hostel, which I changed last night to something more expensive but less scary! Was so excited to be in Melbourne as everyone had said it was a wicked city but first impressions were that it was very grey and lots of building work, and I was really disppointed. The hostel is pretty nice with free breakfast, pasta and rice - what a luxury!! Met a girl whilst clambering over bags in the luggage room and we went exploring together. Having walked about 10 mins from our hostel into the centre I discovered that I LOVE Melbourne. The hostel, although walking distance to town is not in the greatest area and I might move closer to the centre in a few days. Melbourne is just so nice, it is very green and clean and it is a lot smaller than Sydney. Went for a wander to watch the Australian Open (from the bridge overlooking it, we didn't pay!) and saw some very tiny tennis players then thanks to my brilliant map reading got pretty lost and walked god knows where but it was fun. Then wandered back to the South Bank by the river and had some luch. Melbourne is so peaceful and we were warned that it would be packed because of the tennis but it really wasn't. I've booked the Neighbours tour tomorrow which I am actually quite excited about (loser)! and then might check out St Kildas which is meant to be really lovely. Off out tonight with a friend from uni, so she will hopefully show me the sights xx
