Well it is almost my last weekend in Peru and my trip!! Left Arequipa on Tuesday morning and got a bus towards Colca canyon. We were all so exhausted after the Inca trail and just wanted to sleep but stopped to see several volcanoes on the way which were really nice and attempted to steal an alpaca which we named Andy as it was so soft. Arrived in a town close to Colca and checked in to a really cute hotel in the middle of nowhere and then went to the hot springs!! The springs were 39 degrees and we had colca sours which were like pisco sours but much tastier! It was so relaxing and we stayed in there for hours until our tour guide dragged us out! Had dinner back at the hotel and then we were all in bed at 8.30 as we had to be up at 5 the following morning - I don't know how I am going to cope back in England with staying out past 9pm!!!
The following morning I woke up to Danish rap thanks to my lovely roommate which was a perfect way to start the day!!! After breakfast we got the bus to Colca canyon which is one of the deepest canyons in the world. We had to get up so early as we wanted to see the condors who are the only ones up at that ridiculous hour! Well we were really lucky because as soon as we arrived there were 5 or 6 condors circling above us! It was absolutely brilliant to watch them and they were huge - up to 2 metres. Was pretty disappointed with the canyon itself as it was not as impressive or deep as I thought it would be but the condors more than made up for it. Maybe I have just seen too much cool stuff on this trip I have become immune to it now!! After a short hike to the viewpoint we got the bus back to Arequipa and arrived early afternoon. Had a wander around the town and pretty marketplace and then we had a really lovely dinner on the roof terrace of our hotel overlooking the city. We were planning on going out into town but having had several bottles of red wine we were all falling asleep - well we made it past 11pm this time!!
Yesterday we had a really cool day exploring the city. Visited a museum where Juanita the mummy was on display. It was so interesting learning about where she was found on the mountain in Arequipa and all of the inca rituals. Juanita had all of her hair and organs but was still very creepy looking! After the museum we went to the monastary of Santa Catalina which was a village within a village and was beautiful. Had a wander round and sampled the chocolate temptation cake which was filled with dulce de leche and was definitely made by the nuns to punish the sinners - but it was bloody delicious!! For dinner we went to a local place and I finally had guinea pig!! Felt very guilty as I had seen some live ones at the monastry earlier. They were playing very creepy music in the restaurant which was almost like the chefs were peforming a ritual with the guinea pigs before serving them but thankfully mine didn't come whole with fruit stuffed in its mouth and was actually pretty tasty! After dinner we got on the overnight bus to Nazca and had the worst nights sleep!
Arrived in Nazca at 6 this morning and after breakfast we went to visit a cemetary in the desert. It reminded me a bit of the Killing Fields as there were so many graves and there were bones, hairs, clothing etc all scattered around our feet. The mummies were preserved so well as some still had their eyes and tongues in the skulls!! We then took a flight over the Nazca lines and it was BRILLIANT!!!!!! Our pilot asked if we wanted to play around and he dropped the plane and then looped upwards it was so funny as everything went flying and we all felt sick afterwards. The lines were incredible and we saw the astronaut, condor, spider etc so clearly and I think they were made by UFOs!!! It was definitely another great highlight of the trip and we were all grinning like idiots afterwards. We are all going out later for Marks birthday and sampling the nightlife in Nazca which will be interesting! Off to Pisco tomorrow and then Lima where the trip ends! xx
