After a great breakfast sitting by the water at Narooma, we had a quick stop at the stunning beach there and hit the road again. The drive to Eden was so beautiful and we loved looking at all the gorgeous farms and other properties - it's an amazing part of the country to live in. Mum was drooling.
Eden, an old whaling town, is yet another seaside town but is famous for its whale museum. The whalers there found unlikely assistance from a pod of Orcas who lived in the bay. They would help the whalers by actually herding the humpbacks into a group so they could be harpooned. The "catch" would be brought into the harbour and the Orcas would be left to feed on the dead humpbacks - their reward. They only ate the lips and tongue though. Then the whalers would drag the carcasses in for processing. A very weird story of man and beast working together. We found it fascinating if a little gruesome!
After Eden we crossed into Victoria and hit a long stretch of bushland - which makes for a very tough drive! There are signs warning to watch for Kangas everywhere and Mum had her camera at the ready. After hours of being on the lookout (and only seeing dead ones on the road) i saw one in the distance but Mum missed it! This region had suffered bad bushfires in the last month and we saw the remnants of the disaster - lots of blackened trunks and lots of ash.
The wildlife watch continued as, on one particularly long straight road we saw a dingo crossing up ahead. Aswell as a squashed rather large lizard. Victoria is much more pastural and rolling and is distinctively different from NSW.
After an immense drive we stopped at Lakes Entrance and enjoyed a walk along 90 Mile Beach (another one!) followed by a bottle of red wine, some star gazing and lots of deep chats. Aah.
