Still loving Hong Kong! The second half of the second day involved a tour (air-conditioned coach!) and we went up to Victoria Peak from which you can see the whole of the island. We decided it would be better to come back at night for the full effect (very hard to impress after last night's light show!). We also visited Repulse Bay which, despite the name is very nice. This is the beach scene of HK and the houses in the surrounding hills are amazing mansions, some 100 years old and some super new and snazzy. I think one was Jackie Chan's house, but I can't sure...
Then onto Aberdeen, the old fishing 'village', which turned out to be a load of dirty old boats! Seriously though, it was depressing. The boat people are very poor and the Government is trying to evict them from the harbour. In amongst all this is the Jumbo - the world's largest floating chinese restaurant - and of course it looked entirely incongruous surrounded by the poverty.
In the evening we had an authentic Cantonese meal but no-one was really adventurous enough to put the bizarre, slimy and rubbery looking meat in their mouth! The noodles were good though. Pudding was little sponge cakes (that we thought were made of ACTUAL deepsea sponge) and bean curd with coconut. Later a few of us decided to go back up Victoria Peak for more night shots and it was well worth it. What a view - you never get tired of looking at it. We then found the rest of the group in a sports bar - a shrine to Manchester Utd, of which there are many - where young lads play dominos and watch the matches.
On our last day, we simply packed and waited around to be picked up. However, I decided to go off on my own for a wander and to see how scared I would be! But it was very cool and I never felt uncomfortable at any time. I just felt very back-packer-y, browsing the markets in my kharkis!
Our final tour took us into Kowloon and the New Territories. We saw a temple and visited a wishing tree where you throw oranges tied with paper wishes into the branches! Finally a jade market which was cheap cheap cheap but i resisted the temptation to buy.
This is all very brief because I am writing it in Auckland and have been up since the start of yesterday which now stands at 27 hours!!! Had a beetroot, celery, apple and spirulina juice from the shop next door but am still feeling drunk and dizzy from jet lag! Got to go doze - the current state of my mental health is depending on it!! more later - promise x
