Mama Judy here…
A great start to the day with a sighting on the Mara of the rare endangered black rhino, a family of four.
Then began the four wheel drive trek for several hours over the worst dirt roads we have travelled on in Kenya, literally a goat track, so we got a "free massage" as the locals call it. On our way to the Tanzania border we passed Masai in their striking red clothing, herding their flocks of goat/cattle. After clearing immigration we transferred to our safari vehicle with Anton our driver from Leopard Safaris, the vehicle was not to the same standard as we had in Kenya, so after some discussion, a different one will be ready for us tomorrow. Now in Tanzania, we drove through areas more populated, again many churches and schools, education is a priority both in Kenya and Tanzania. It seemed to be children washing day as we saw many being bathed along the way.
We arrived in Musoma on the shore of Lake Victoria to board our dhow fishing boat for our 13k, hour boat trip to Lukaba Island, which is in Lake Victoria, where we spent the night, with our lanai's right on the water.
After settling in, it was time to break out the Bollinger champagne Laurel had received from her son Brenton for her birthday, for another celebratory drink, and so the birthday celebration continues. As we have done limited walking so far, we took the hosts, Roux and Surina's suggestion of a walk to the top of the island to watch the sunset, with "rock" top drinks, the view and setting was wonderful. What made this island interesting is, no TV, phone, power available only between 6.30pm > 11pm each day - therefore no hair dryer in the morning - or a washing machine, so the sheets are washed by hand! A beautiful and memorable place.
Quote of the day - from Judy - "Oh look how the plane is hovering over the Mara, no Judy that plane has already landed on the escarpment!"
