Day 9 Tuesday 20/08 Heidelberg > Interlaken 25deg glorious Sunshine - It has been great not to rush, so after a relaxed start to the morning we set off to explore the ancient town of Heidelberg located on the Neckar River. We walked the main plaza, which of course this time the shops were open, so John had to help the economy of Heidelberg and buy a shirt. We bought tickets on the funicular railway to go to the top of the town, Konigstuhl which had marvellous views of the old city and river and then the Castle. We asked if they had a seniors rate, and we thought what a bargain €13 for both us, down from €24, in hindsight we think, due to language differences we had only purchased single tickets as they were not going to let us on to come back down, eventually we got it sorted. We then went down to the level of the Heidelberger Schloss (Castle) and had a look around the magnificent structure of sandstone with walls over 26ft thick. We then hit the autobahn for a 250km drive to and 3 hours later and we were driving alongside Lake Thunersee into the picturesque town of Interlaken, Switzerland. The owner of our hotel was a Kiwi, so of course there was the usual friendly bantering when we checked in. The rooms were like cabins and very compact, with views of the stunning mountains, giving us a taste of what we might experience the next day. Switzerland is expensive unlike the other places we have been so far, and they do not operate under the Euro so if using euro to pay, all change is given in Swiss francs which of course can only be used in Switzerland.
