Our flight with SAA from Jo'burg to Nairobi was over the plains of Africa, very dry and barren with a view of Mt Kilimanjaro, partially covered in cloud and near the Tanzanian border. The Nairobi arrival terminal is the former multi level car park with major work being undertaken on a new terminal. We were met by Benson from our local safari tour company for the 15k drive to the Stanley Sarova Hotel in Nairobi by Joshua who will be our driver to the Kenyan border. The traffic was incredible and after 1h 15m we made it! So many people walking, apparently they walk to and from work each day approx 10-12 klms each way, earn US$7 per day and have no electricity or running water. We saw the Marabou bird atop the acacia trees that line the highway into the city. Our hotel is from the colonial period and has been an institution in Nairobi since 1902. From the top of the hotel we saw our first view of a magnificent African setting sun. Our friends, Nick and Laurel from Sydney, who are the wonderful reason we are in Africa arrived from London late that night and of course a welcome drink was had in the Long Bar.
