Sunday 1st June - Wednesday 4th June 2008
G'day, well I am late writing all these but better late than never! On Sunday afternoon we left Townsville for the journey down to Airlie Beach. I didnt know alot about the area so was expecting it to be a beach sort of resort however it isnt as the beach is tiny. It is basically the gateway to the Whitsundays.
We arrived in the afternoon and had a drive around the area to see what there was, and the main strip reminded me abit of Turkey when I was over there, its a lively place by night but pretty quiet during the day. The main highlight of Airlie Beach was definately the lagoon which is superb! Its a huge outdoor pool with subathing facilities that sits slap bang on the coast and looks out over the harbour.
So that evening we parked up and set up the gas stove for some burgers. We had a wonder around the street and saw some deals for Whitsunday and Fraser Island packages so we took the leaflets and hit off for an early night.
Monday was a stunning day, the sun was beaming and the weather was roasting. Today, the 1st of June was the official start of winter here, not bad lazing around in 27c heat! We chilled out all day around the lagoon catching some raise to try and darken Adams pasty white skin - only for his back to turn red raw as he didnt ask me to rub sun cream on it as he thought it'd look gay - silly arse!
We bumped into 2 girls that we had seen on Magnetic Island so I had a word with them around the lagoon, and agreed to meet up with them later on to "slap the goon" - basically get wasted!
We also booked our trips. We decided against the Whitsundays due to the lack of time we had, instead opting just for a Fraser Island package which was to start leave on Thursday from Hervey Bay.
On Monday evening we met up with the Scottish girls and headed to their hostel to have a game of ring of fire with her roomies. That passed on the evening well and we headed back to the van in the early hours which was parked on some random street a few blocks away.
Tuesday dawned again another awesome sunny day. We set off on the journey down to Seventeen Seventy, a town around 8 hours drive away. A couple of my mates from Sydney who I made really good mates with were down there, and as it was on the route down to Hervey Bay anyway we were going to call in. The drive was uneventful and we arrived in 1770 around 6ish. It took a while to find the hostel where the guys were staying but after a few locals pointed us in the right direction there was no problem.
When we arrived we were greated by an a******* of a receptionist who refused to let us in the hostel to meet my friends. There is no mobile signal down there so he agreed he would go to the room and get them. The guy was a total idiot and was just the start of our problems with him!
We met Vic and Tom had a chat for a while and then got ready to go out. We parked the van outside the hostel and I tried to sneak in a couple of times yet he always came and found me, must have been watching on CCTV or something! So anyway we all headed out however Adam ended up asleep in the van so I left him to it!
Later that night when we headed back to the hostel the receptionist had gone - as you would expect at around 2am, but it wasnt the last of the troubles! I was in the guys room and was gunna sleep in there yet he must of heard us coming in and was searching the premises for me hah but i was curled up nicely in someones bed and they just said i wasnt there so that was fine, but poor Adam had alsorts of crap from him.
He must have gone outside to the van to see only Adam was there and demanded he moved the van as it was private and he would phone the police if he didnt move. Adam didnt move it so 10mins later the guy comes back and starts throwing little stones at the van at which point Adam moved the van. The spot was perfectly fine where we were parked, the guy just chose to be a prat - why the hell he didnt just go to bed I dont know. So anyway Adam moved the van around the corner, then 10 mins later the guy came back again and opened the van door, sat inside and said if he doesnt move the van there will be big trouble as if he was going to fight him, so he moves the car again. Adam is just soft and probably didnt say anything but I would have loved to have been there and use skills at being an arse with him which mum thankfully passed on to me!
Anyhow I ended up sleeping in the hostel then as I couldnt find where Adam had moved the car so just crashed with those guys. The following Wednesday morning Adam wanted to go to the police station to see if it was illegal to sleep where we left it which it wasnt, so I went back in to the hostel to have a word but the guy wasnt there so instead I wrote a note in the guest book on enterance basically saying what an arse the guy is, not to stay there and just wrote he was a d*** on every page that had previously had good comments on (how immature of me ) The lady behind reception at the time didnt know I wasnt a guest and let me write my thing, when I left however and she'd realised what I said she ran outside, at which point we were driving away giving her a cheeky wave.
We were then on our way down to Hervey Bay which didnt take long, we stopped in Bundaburg on the way down but that wasnt worthwhile. As part of the Fraser Island package we had a nights accomodation in Hervey Bay for the night before we left for Fraser, and for the night we returned. At 3pm that afternoon we had to be there for a safety briefing and we got to meet the other guys from our group - just 6 of us. That night the 6 of us had drinks etc then hit the sack ready for an early start on Thursday morning!!
