We had a leisurely start to the day as we were leaving at 8.00am to catch our Air Mombassa flight to the Masai Mara. We were greeted by Mount Kilimanjaro as we left our tent - it had emerged from the clouds so we had great views of the mountain, if not with greatest clarity, while eating our breakfast. Eric who collected us on day 1 transported us back to the airstrip - the plane arrived on time and luckily we were the next stop, Keekerok - so it was like a hop ...

Today started with our wake up call and tea and wondering what we would see on our morning drive. All was soon revealed - today was a cheetah and elephant day! We watched a cheetah mum and two cubs who were continually playing ( today's photo) except when mum was hunting a Thompson's gazelle when they instinctively sat still and watched - sadly no breakfast as the gazelles were too alert! We then watched an old male elephant as he slowly walked, rested seemingly...

A 5.45am wake up call, with tea, preceded our 0630 game drive. The light this morning was amazing and as dawn broke a golden colour bathed the landscape and made our very early sighting of a cheetah mum and cubs all the more special. I am not sure how Jonathan spotted them as they were so well camouflaged against the golden background. We later learnt that he used the other animals to tell him what's about - as we watched him work we thought he was the best guide...

Our 8am flight from Wilson Airport to Amboseli left on time - the other passengers, a very nice, if initially reserved, English family, ended up being our safari companions for the next 3 days. We were collected by Eric, but met by Jonathan, our full time guide, at 4pm tea, just prior to the afternoon drive. We did wonder how he would improve on the slow safari drive back to Tortillis under Eric's tutelage......but then every day is a different adventure. Tort...

This holiday proves "dreams do come true"; sometimes it was the only thing I could think about when I was cycling from Lands End to John O'Groats just a month ago. The cycling challenge was to test me, which it did, while this was to celebrate my 60th birthday and I am glad I didn't combine them!
