Today was a travel day - Chile is the longest thinest country in the world and extends through 44 degrees of latitude most of which we will cross as we head to the far south- consequently we were up early and we left for the airport at 7am. We arrived just after 0815 said our goodbyes to Santiago and checked in. Our flight left on time at 0950 next stop Santiago with a Starbucks and Cinnabon interlude before catching our next flight at 1400 to Punta Arenas with a stop at Puerto Montt to drop off and collect passengers. Each LAN flight offers two items from cheese sticks, cake, fruit pot ( the saving grace) peanuts and a drink - so after 3 flights I was snacked out.
We finally got to Punto Arenas at 1835 and were transferred the 30minutes into the town to our hotel. The sea was everywhere and the industry was connected with shipping - just as we arrived there was a rain shower and consequently enroute we saw a magnificent rainbow - the full multi coloured arch - I caught some of it from our speeding car on my iPad - today's photo. It's definitely cooler here and very windy - a 10-15 degree drop in temperature - it has the air of Scotland about it.
Settled into our room at the comfortable Hotel Cabo de Hornos we decided to have our first real meal of the day - more rustic than Awasi but hot and filling - I went for the salmon as there was nothing vegetarian in sight and John went for the local lamb- we were not disappointed.
As sunset wasn't until 2210 we we're glad of the blackout curtains albeit we were awoken at 0330 by boy racers using the empty streets as a race track!
I looked out and saw one police car but not sure what happened as we finally got off to sleep again.
