We were awake at 5am - at 6am I persuaded John to come and sit by the pool while I had a swim - that way he could have a cup of tea -needless to say he didn't take much persuading.
After a shower we went to breakfast and prepared ourselves for a trip to Little Tobago - an island off the coast which is now a bird sanctuary.
At 1030 we left the dock on a glass bottom boat - when we arrived at the island we passed a male brown booby feeding his big fluffy white chick:on arrival at the dock we were met by a number of laughing gulls with lovely glossy black heads. We set off up the trail - our first sighting was a audobon shearwater, in a hole, on a nest; next we saw a scaly naped pigeon which we got a better look at on the way back....this species arrived with hurricane Ivan in about 2005. The other species we saw on the path to the trail end point included the house wren, blue grey tanager, chivi vireo, northern waterthrush, spectacled thrush and a hummingbird. At the top we looked over the cliff to see the red billed tropic birds returning to feed their chicks, due to the winds some had to make several attempts to land, while others were harassed by the magnificent frigate birds trying, and sometimes succeeding, to steal their fish. We also saw more brown boobies and red footed boobies but a way off and difficult to photograph. Flying around we're also short tailed swifts. Prior to leaving the guide pointed to a tropic bird chick concealed in the bushes which I was standing very close to.....a lovely big fat chick but still several weeks off fledging apparently.
When we returned to the boat we made our way to view some of the coral reef - which includes the largest area
of brain coral in the world; swimming over the coral we saw lots of fishes, a hawksbill turtle and a small nurse shark.
We returned for lunch then sat in the sun which was intermittent dry and sprinkles of rain....but at 4pm I had a massage and a pedicure - I arranged for a therapist to come to the resort yesterday and I am glad I did as it was very good.
Dinner and an early night reflecting on another good day seeing several more new species.
