After a quick stop Hue we got on another night bus to Hanoi. This bus was a lot more comfortable and we all managed to sleep reasonably well. Having said that when we got in to our hotel room we all crashed out. Late afternoon we took a stroll to the old quarter and the lake. It looked a nice city and had very modern shops. The old quarter had smaller streets with lots of places to eat. After choosing one we went to the famous junction where there is the cheapest beer in the world. We got a beer for 13p each, although it wasn't that nice. We sat on the plastic stools on the pavement and watched the crazy moto drivers at the junction. Afterwards we went to find somewhere who was playing the football. We found 'LePub' which the Lonely Planet recommended and got comfortable for the Arsenal Totenham game. Was a good result for us so we walked happily home, freezing though!
The next day the weather hadn't warmed up and we had booked a tour to Halong Bay. After 4 hours in the coach we arrived and got our junk boat and started to head towards the floating village. On route we had lunch which was Vietnamese food, which we are not too keen on but it was ok. We reached the floating village and got in to kayaks. We paddled around some of the islands. In the floating village we could see a school and it was amazing to see how they live. Just as we finished kayaking it started to rain. Luckily by the time we got off the boat again it had stopped. We then went to a cave which was like interesting to see. Halong Bay to us was very much like Milford Sound scenery and probably wasn't worth the 4 hour bus ride, but it was quite a nice way to spend our final full day with Darius and Toby. After a long journey back we went for a really nice Indian in the old quarter of town.
We woke late the next day, after Toby had yet another funny night terror, which was our last to experience…thank god! We went for our final supper with the boys. We went back to Le Pub as it was one of the only places in Vietnam that we had portions which filled the boys up. We quickly went back to the hotel as it was freezing outside. We had thrown all our warm clothes in Singapore thinking that all of Asia was hot, but how wrong we were! We said goodbye to the boys as they got their bus to Laos. It felt strange being on our own as we had travelled as a 4 for so long and had such fun. We are so jealous they have everything that we have done to come!! In the evening we did some souvenir shopping for presents and then packed for our flight to Bangkok in the morning.
