Tuesday we decided to go to Uruguay for a couple of days because it is only an hour ferry from Buenos Aires. The cost of the ferry was more than what we budgeted and what it said in the lonely planet but before we could decide not to go, the man had reserved our seats. We booked a nights hostel in Colonia del Sacramento, a small fishing town. It is a huge contrast from Buenos Aires and was nice to escape the madness of the city. When we arrived in Colonia we walked around the town and checked out the prices of the restaurants. As the ferry cost a bit more than we expected we decided to cook the cheap meal of frankfurters and bread.
On Wednesday we looked around Colonia, the old town is pretty but we decided that there wasn't enough to do to fill another day before our ferry back to BA. We then decided to book bus tickets to Montevideo for Thursday. We have had glorious sunshine in Uruguay so after looking in some craft shops we enjoyed an ice-cream and sat in the park, doing Rachel's favourite...people watching!
The bus journey to Montevideo was about 2 hours from Colonia. We tried to find a tourist information shop for a map as we had arrived quite unprepared and unsure where to go. The main centre of the city was about an hour's walk from the bus station so we set off walking down the main road. Montevideo was just a typical city, there were pretty colonial styled buildings, theatres, and nice plazas with a lot of people sitting outside in restaurants and bars because of the nice weather. We walked down to the sea front, but it wasn't as picturesque as we had hoped, and soon decided to head back to the main plazas. There we had Mexican food for lunch, quesadilla's, it made a nice change from red meat. We then sat in the sun for a while before taking a casual stroll back down the main road, similar to Oxford Street, to the bus station. On our way back J's flip flop broke so had to walk in bare feet, his feet got filthy and he got some dodgy looks from the locals. Finally we managed to find a store selling Havaianas in the bus station so he bought a pair for the bargain price of £10 - sorted! Uruguay has made a pleasant change from busy Buenos Aires but we are now looking forward to travelling back to Argentina to see more of the country.
