After about an hour and half we arrived in Paraty at yet another Che Lagarto hostel. We settled ourselves in and then went to find the most important thing... food! We went in to the local supermarket and bought our dinners (pasta and pizzas) for the 3 nights. We then got a couple of drinks at the hostel bar and spent the night chatting to an Australian guy, John, that we had previously met on our tour in Rio. John had been travelling for 9 months and was nearing the end of his trip so was giving us tips on where to go in South America and dangers to look out for in Australia!
On Sunday it was a fairly cloudy day so we decided to have a walk round the cobbled stone streets of Paraty. Paraty was a small fishing village and the historic part of the town is very pretty and rustic looking. The historic part of the town is said to still flood when there is a full moon to clean the streets. Now prepared for tourism there were plenty of craft shops that we looked around and a number of restaurants that we were very tempted to eat in. It didn't take long to do our own little tour of the town, so we went back to the hostel in the afternoon and skyped our parents and send emails to a few friends. We had worked up a bit of an appetite so we prepared our dinner.
In the morning we woke early and had breakfast, then walked to the bus station to purchase out tickets to Sao Paulo, which is where we needed to catch our connecting bus to Foz de Iguazu. The morning was warm with the sun piercing through the clouds so we decided to walk to the nearest beach which was no comparison to Lopez Mendes but still passed the time. We both managed to sun bath for 20 minutes or so when a stray dog appeared with a coconut in its mouth, wanting to play. After an hour of us not paying it much attention and the dog flicking sand all over Rachel we moved on and sat on a more peaceful spot of grass the other side of the river overlooking the beach. We laid there until early afternoon, watching local fisherman try to catch fish in the sea. Rachel then realised she had burnt her legs, so we had to retreat to the hostel! In the evening we shared photos and stories of travelling with two other couples staying at our hostel. Both of them had been travelling for a long time so had lots of places to recommend to us and we can now not wait for some Argentinian steak! Our stay in Paraty was nice and relaxing, it is a peaceful, pretty place but with little to do in the town, we, like other travellers, used it as a town to chill and save some money before our first overnight bus journey to Foz de Iguazu.
