ADO busses in Mexico are well organized, comfortable, on time and cheap. They put the UK to shame!
Matt and I caught the early bus from Tulum to Chetumal so we could get the Water Taxi across to San Pedro on Ambergris Caye, Belize.
Having not heard great things about Chetumal and having no idea how to get from the ADO station to the port we decided to jump in a cab. Taxi's in Mexico seem to work on an involuntary cab share scheme but it was quite a surprise when we ended up sharing with Joel who had spent the night at Chetumal and was also headed for San Pedro.
The hour or so boat ride was pretty bumpy but got us there in got us there in good time and Joel had a couple or spare beers to help pass the time. I don't like beer at the best of times but warm beer shaken around by the boat was pretty awful, and messy!!
Pedro's Inn is pretty much the only 'budget' hostel on the popular Americanized Island. Owned by a rather rude British guy called Peter, but very smoothly run by Cindy. Cindy put the three of us in an empty dorm and opened our bar tab, "I'm going to like this place", I thought to myself
Sitting down in the shade to enjoy a glass of rum punch we met a couple of chatty (drunk) Norwegian girls, Teresa and Hege. Keen to explore the island and bars, Hege offered to show us around.
On our first full day there we were keen to get out on the reef to do some snorkeling. We booked on with a local guide and headed off to Shark Ray Alley and Hol Chan. Brilliant snorkeling in only a couple of meters of water. Plenty of photo opportunities with Nurse Sharks, rays, turtles and Moray eels.
The rest of our time on Ambergris was spent relaxing, swimming drinking and for me, diving.
The five of us then planned our attack on mainland Belize. I had originally planned to stay on the Cayes a little longer but decided that traveling with the guys would be good fun and after all, this traveling business is meant to be about spontaneity and impulse decisions, Right?
