This is the part of the trip that I have been looking forward to the most (and we saved it to the very end). I have always wanted to ride down a lonely road in the French countryside with my family then roll into a little village for lunch. Perfect! And on top of that we've had +34 temps every day and have been hanging out with Tim, Debbie, Shannon and Mira again-a month after sailing with them in Croatia.
I really wasn't sure how the kids would do with the distance...and the heat. Kaya is on her own bike and has been singing the Frozen soundtrack with her buddy Shannon for 35kms per day. Mahri's been on a "Weehoo" recumbant trail-a-bike with me which allows her to save energy for keeping up with the big kids in the pool in the evening. All the kids have totally impressed me. We had repeated long hot rides and they've done great plus following it up with hours of diving in the pool and French meals that start at 7 and end at 10.
The highlight of the trip has to be taking a wrong turn on day one only to stumble across a field of the most amazing apricots I've ever eaten followed by a field of cherry trees that had us all speechless and stuffing our faces with sun-hot cherries. There's something special about eating fruit right from the tree especially when it's a fruit that we only ever see on the grocery store!
Tomorrow we will spend the day wandering around Avignon then begin our journey home via Lyon. Going to be very sad to leave. I could spend many more days discovering the many small wonders of France.
