Onze volgende bestemming is de glasshouse mountains. Ze lijken niet echt op kassen, of wintertuinen, maar captain Cook vond schijnbaar van wel... Het is een mooi gebied om te wandelen, maar de belangrijkste reden waarom we hier zijn is de Australia Zoo in Beerwah. Steve Irwin's dierentuin, ooit door z'n vader opgestart is als dierenparkje. Steve heeft er een grote dierentuin van gemaakt, met o.a. zelfgevangen krokodillen en een amphitheater, het "Crocoseum". Het is werkelijk een geweldige dierentuin, met een boodschap. Ze doen veel aan voorlichting en hebben zelfs een eigen dierenziekenhuis. Van 10 tot 4 lopen we langs tijgers, wombats en krokodillen, gaan naar de show in het crocoseum, knuffelen met koala's en voeren kangaroo's, walibi's en olifanten. En nog veel en veel meer. Helemaal blij van een dagje dierentuin stappen we in de auto, op zoek naar een campground. Naar een rit door het bos komen we per toeval terecht in Yandina. In de keuken komen we een echtpaar uit Yeppoon tegen dat ons voorziet van toeristeninfo. Zij vertellen ons o.a. over Agnes Waters en de workmens beach campground. Dat klinkt zo goed dat we de volgende dag in de auto stappen en via Bundaberg naar Agnes Waters rijden.

Our next destination is the glasshouse mountains. They do not really look like hothouses, or wintergardens, but when captain Cook arrived he said the hill looked like glasshouses... It is a nice area for walking, but the main reason why we are here is the Australia Zoo. Steve Irwin'n zoo, once started by his father as a small reptile zoo. Steve added the crocs he caught himself, the crocoseum and many other animals. It is a wonderfull zoo, a zoo with a message...a lot of the displays contain information on the animals, and the show in the crocoseum is more about learning then about the show. They even have their own animal hospital. From 10AM till 4PM we walk past tigers, wombats and crocs, see the show in the crocoseum, cuddle with koala's and feed the kangaroo's and walibi's. And much, much more. We leave the zoo with a big smile on our faces. We drive further north, and, after driving through a forest, we end up in Yandina. In the campkitchen we meet a couple from Yeppoon, they give us a lot of tourist information. They tell us about Agnes Waters, and the workmens beach campground there. It sounds very good, so the next day we step in the van, and drive north: first through Bundaberg and then to Agnes Waters.
