Van Kuala Lumpur reizen we naar Melaka. Ooit even een deel van Nederland, nu een stadje dat op de World Heritage lijst staat vanweg zijn multi-culturele karakter. We hebben ons bezoek goed "gepland", sinds 7 juli 2008 staat het stadje officieel op de World Heritage lijst, en dat moet gevierd worden. Als we op 6 juli aankomen en op zoek zijn naar een hostel, zien we dat de voorbereidingen in volle gang zijn. Ons hostel bevindt zich op de rand van de oude stad. Een kamer met 2 bedden (die we snel tegen elkaar schuiven), een gezamenlijke keuken (dat is lang geleden), een chinees toilet (zijn we inmiddels ook wel gewend) en een koude douche (het is warm genoeg, dus dat is niet erg). Dat is wel even wat anders als onze kamer in het Sheraton. Ik moet daarbij wel zeggen dat deze kamer ons slechts 8 euro per nacht kost. ;)

Het stadje zelf is een mix van oud en nieuw. Er zijn nog veel oude Nederlandse gebouwen te zien, waaronder het Stadthuys, een kerk en wat huizen. Niet alleen de Nederlanders hebben hun sporen achter gelaten, er is ook veel te zien van de Chinezen, de Portugezen en de Britten. En vlak naast dit alles: hypermoderne winkelcentra. Inclusief een bioscoop met engelstalige films. Dat vindt Jos wel fijn, want de nieuwe film van de Transformers is net uit. Jos gaat naar de film, en ik naar het Stadthuys museum.

Wat ons vooral opvalt aan Melaka is dat de mensen er zo ontzettend vriendelijk zijn. Daar moeten we een beetje aan wennen, omdat we de meeste mensen in Vietnam en Cambodja vriendelijk zijn omdat ze iets aan je kunnen verdienen (gelukkig zijn we ook genoeg uitzonderingen op die regel tegengekomen).

Eigenlijk toch wel de leukste ervaring in Melaka is de World Heritage viering op 7 juli. Er worden verschillende ambachten gedemonstreerd, er worden lokale gebruiken getoond (zoals een bruiloft), er worden een aantal belangrijke momenten uit de gescheidenis getoond, er wordt veel gedanst en gezongen. Er zijn verschillende prominente mensen aanwezig waaronder de gouverneur, die alleen traditionele kostums dragen. De presentatie is in het Malay en in het Engels. Wat me opvalt is dat metname de Chinezen en de Portugezen goed vertegenwoordigt zijn. Toen de Nederlanders vertrokken, zijn er slechts een paar families gebleven, en die zijn opgenomen in de Portugeze gemeenschap. Geen klompendans dus. Gelukkig zijn we niet de enige Nederlandse toeristen, met zeker 6 mensen vormen we een kleine vertegenwoordiging van ons landje in het publiek. Op het einde van de voorstelling worden we meegenomen naar de dansvloer, en begint het vuurwerk. Een leuke afsluiting van een leuk avondje. :)

We travel from Kuala Lumpur to Melaka by bus. Once this place was under the control of the Dutch, now it is on the World Heritage list because of it's multi-cultural people and buildings. We somehow manage to be in Melaka at the right time. Last year, on July 7th, this town was inscribed on the World Heritage list, so a celebration is in order. We arrive on July 6th, and while we are looking for a hostel, we can see the preparations for the show.

Our hostel is located just outside of the old town. We have a room with 2 beds, there is a guest kitchen (we have not seen those for a while), a chinese toilet and a cold shower (it is so hot outside, that it does not bother us). Definitely something completely different from the room we had in Sheraton ;) But then again: we only pay 8 euro per night for this ;)

The town itself is a mix of old and new. There are still many old Dutch buildings: the city hall, a church and some houses. The Dutch aren't the only foreigners that left there mark on the town: you can find Chinese, Portugese and British influances. And next to all of this is a brand new mall. The part that Jos likes about this is the cinema: the new Transformers movie has just been released. So while Jos goes to the movies, I visit the old city hall, which is now a museum.

What we like about Melaka is that the people are so friendly. We have learned that most people are nice when they want something (allthough we have also met many many exeptions to this rule), so this is different.

Probably the best experience we have in Melaka is the World Heritage celebration on July the 7th. There are demonstrations of local crafts and local customs, there are a couple of important moments in history shown, there is singing and dancing. Important people, one of them is the gouvernor, are attending the celebration, all dressed in beautifull traditional costumes. And the presentation is in Malay and English. What strikes me is that the Chinezen and Portugesen culture is well represented. When the Dutch left, only a few families stayed, but expect for the buildings, nothing of the culture seems to be there. So no dancing in wooden shoes. ;) Fortunately we are not the only Dutch in the crowd. Together with one family, we represent the Dutch in the audience. At the end of the show, the dancers try to get everyone on the dancefloor. We join in and dance with the locals while in the background there is a firework display. Nice ending to a nic evening. :)
