Ubud, 12 jaar geleden was ik hier een paar dagen. Het is een beetje raar om terug te zijn. Het is anders, en toch herken ik dingen. De markt is hetzelfde, minus de fruitverkopers, die hebben plaatsgemaakt voor winkeltjes met nog meer batiks en ander spul. Het apenwoud is er ook nog en het lijkt erop dat de apen ook niet stilgezeten hebben. ;)

We komen aan op 22 juli en vinden een bungalowtje op de rand van Ubud. Best een aardig plekje, al komen we er die eerste dag gelijk achter waarom het handiger is om dichter bij het centrum te zitten: als het stortregent en je moet van een restaurantje teruglopen, dan kom je doorweekt aan. Tja, gelukkig hebben we dit keer een warme douche. :)

Het centrum van Ubud is niet groot, een barst bijna uit zijn voegen van de winkels en andere op toerististen gerichte zaakjes. Het lijkt erop dat sommige chauffeurs het aanspreken van toeristen al zo moe zijn, dat ze een bordje hebben met "taxi?¨ oid. We hebben er zelfs al 1 gezien die op de achterkant "maybe tomorrow?" had staan. Het is wel grappig, maar toch is het ook raar, bijna een parodie.

Waar we wel blij van worden is het eten: het eten is hier niet zo flauw. Het lijkt erop dat men in de toeristen restaurants alleen maar mild kookt, in Ubud zit er in het eten van soortgelijke restaurants genoeg pit dat we niet om de sambal hoeven te vragen.

De eerste paar dagen regent het 's avonds, overdag is het droog. Daar maken we gebruik van: lopend verkennen we Ubud en omgeving. Door de rijstvelden, langs de rijstvelden, en zo'n beetje iedere straat van Ubud. We weten waar de supermarkten zijn, we zijn langs tempels en dorpen gelopen, hebben de botanische tuin gezien, hebben het monkey forest overleefd, weten nu waar we potentieel leuke spullen kunnen kopen, ik heb al 2 musea gezien en verschillende gallerieen.

Het bevalt ons wel in Ubud, we besluiten om nog een tijdje te blijven en een huisje te huren. We vinden een huisje met keuken en tuin dat te huur is voor 11 dagen vanaf 4 Augustus. Het nadeel is dat we op 31 july onze bungalow bij Puri Bebengan moeten verlaten, en dus gaan we op zoek naar iets om van de 31e tot de 4e te verblijven. Per toeval ontmoeten we Wayan, hij woont in een huis midden in de rijstvelden and heeft een kamer te huur. Het is geen luxe, dat vinden we prima. Wayan zorgt goed voor ons, en het is er rustig (behalve dan het kikkerconcert iedere avond, haha). Ik geloof niet dat we ons iets beters hadden kunnen wensen voor deze paar dagen!

Ubud, I have been here before, 12 years ago. It is a little bit strange to be back. The town looks different, still some things are the same, The market is still there, but the tourist information centre across the street looks new. The monkey forest is still there and it looks like there are even more monkeys then there were 12 years ago.

We arrive in Ubud on July the 22nd, and find a small bungalow in a quiet corner of Ubud, close to the ricefields. Nice spot, but a little far from the center of Ubud. On the first day we notice it can be good to be a little bit closer: when it rains in Ubud, you are sooked by the time to are back at the bungalow. Good thing that this time we have a hot shower :)

Ubud's center is not very big, just a few streets. However there a so many shops, restaurants and other tourist-businesses that we were happy to find streets that are not so crowded. It even looks like some of the taxi drivers are so tired of saying "transport?" all the time, that they have a sign that says "taxi?". We have even seen one that said "maybe tomorrow?" on the back. It is actually funny, and strange at the same time, almost like a parodie.

What makes us happy to be in Ubud is that the food is less blend then in Sanur. It almost seems that the tourist in Sanur do not like Balinese food. Here the "tourist¨ food is not as spicy as some Balinese food, but at least now we do not have to ask for the sambal.

The first couple of days it rains at night, it is dry during the day. Good weather for exploring Ubud and it surroundings. We walk everywhere: through the ricefields, on the road past more ricefields, and practically every street of Ubud. We now know where to find the supermarkets, walked passed villages and temples, visited the botanical garden, survived the monkey forest, and had a first look at some of the shops. I visited 2 musea and several galleries.

We like Ubud and decide to stay here for a while. We found a nice house with a kitchen and garden that we can rent for 11 days, which is available as of August 4. Since we can only stay in Puri Bebengan untill July 31st, we have to find another place for a few days. Luck brings us to Wayan, he lives in a house in the middle of the ricefields and has one room for rent. It is very basic, which we like, Wayan takes good care of us, and it is quiet (accept for the frogs in the evening, they are a bit loud, haha) We could not have found a better place!
