De Gunung Batur. Een van de weinige dingen die ik wilde doen op Bali was een vulkaan beklimmen en na al dat rustig aan doen is het tijd om voor iets aktiefs. Mark gaat mee, want die heeft ook wel zin om een berg te beklimmen. De dag begint met een grote uitdaging: op 3 uur 's nachts moeten we klaar staan voor vertrek, Onze chauffeur, Ketut, is een stuk wakkerder als wij, al lachend en pratend brengt hij ons naar de parkeerplaats aan de voet van de Gunung Batur. Daar stelt hij ons voor aan onze gids: Nyoman. Nyoman leidt ons in het donker naar boven. Beetje lastig soms, het is een terrein met variatie: vlak, helling, tredes, los zand, los puin en stevige rots. En dat voelt toch anders als het donker is. Als we op de top staan begint het al wat lichter te worden en kunnen we de maan, die net opgekomen is, duidelijk zien. We lopen nog een stukje verder, naar een huisje waar het beschut is en waar ze koffie en thee verkopen. Eerst natuurlijk even flink wat foto's maken. Mark maakt een filmpje voor Marielle, kan ze toch nog een beetje meegenieten. We eten wat boterhammen en genieten van de zonsopgang. Terwijl de zon te voorschijn komt zien we steeds meer van de omgeving. Volgens Peter moet je dan wel "behoorlijk fanatiek" zijn om zo vroeg een berg te beklimmen, maar het is toch zeker wel de moeite waard!

Als we genoeg foto's hebben genomen, lopen we verder langs de kraterrand. Zo'n pad waarvan je denkt: "maar goed dat het licht is". Onderweg vertelt Nyoman wat dingen over de vulkaan, en de omgeving, de uitbarstingen, de mensen, de tempel die niet verwoest is, enz. Hij leidt ons bijna de hele krater rond en weer naar beneden naar de parkeerplaats. Daar staat Ketut klaar om ons weer terug te brengen naar Ubud.

The Gunung Batur. One of the larger vulcano's on this island. And before we leave Bali, I wanted to climb a vulcano. Beside, we have been taking it easy for a while, it is time to do something a little more strengouos. Mark joins us for this trip. Which starts with the biggest challenge: getting up early! At 3 in the morning we get in the car with our driver Ketut, who brings us to the parking at the foot of mount Batur. He intriduces us to Nyoman, our mountainguide. It is still dark and Nyoman guides us through terrain that varies from a pleasant walk thru the woods, loose sand, rocks to a steep ascent to the top. When we reach the top it start to get light and we can see the rise of the moon. We walk a little further along the rim to a shelter were they serve tea and coffee. The first thing we do when we get there is take pictures. Mark shoots a short film for Marielle. We have some breakfast and warm ourselves on the hot tea and coffee. The sunrise is beautifull, while the sun rises we see more and more of the area around the gunung Batur. Peter said that to climb this mountain for sunrise you must really want to see the sunrise. We can now say that it is absolutely worth it!

When we made enough pictures, we continue our hike along the edge of the crater. It is one of those paths that makes you think: "good that it is not dark anymore". While walking along, Nyoman tells us stories about the vulcano, the surroundings, the people that live here and the lucky temple that survived the last eruption. He leads us back to the parking, where Ketut is waiting for us.
