Just arrived in Croatia! (Not the UK again already, as my blog entry is suggesting. Teething problems, will get that right next time). In Rijeka, which is a northern port, not a standard backpacker stop-off point, and not really an intended stopping point for us, but we´re going to stay for a day just to work out how exactly we´re going to traverse Croatia.
To backtrack over the last couple of days, the Slovenian Alps were stunning. Our stop off points, Lake Bled for an hour, and then Lake Bohinj for the rest of the day, were a tad touristy, but still beautiful places with clean, crisp blue waters, surrounded by forested (no surpises there!) mountains, and the views from the bus ride to reach them alone made the effort worthwhile.
Then had the morning and half the afternoon today to explore a bit more of Ljubljana. An accident, as the train we were going to get to see some caves pulled away as we walked into the station, but a superb accident! Discovered an alternative part of the city, surrounding a hostel that was previously a prison, and the graffiti was like nothing I´ve seen before. Fantastic stuff, and a lot of it spreading beyond simple wall art, incorporating windows, doors, objects, and random homemade elements like gates made out of bikes. Took loads of pics, and definitely worth a perusal!
Last thing, Hostel dorm-mates review, MyHostel Ljubljana: One homesick Aussie, three mardy French, one silent therefore accentless therefore unidentifiable oriental girl. French and oriental girl replaced on 3rd night by a Spaniard, two American girls and an American guy with the most impressive handlebar moustache I´ve ever seen for an under 30 year old. Although thinking about it, not seen many, as a rare choice of facial hair. Also met posh, horse-loving English girls, group of young, rowdy (but friendly) Dutch lads (one of whom actually travelled to England specifically to see Everton play once - fool!), and top Aussie bloke, Steven (with unusual lack of Aussie accent) in the hostel.
