View of the trip so far! From the top of the hill overlooking the Dubrovnik Old Town, looking up the coast at the brooding, whale-like silhouettes of islands sitting in the Adriatic. Check out the pics!
Other than that, Dubrovnik was pretty much as we'd expected, having spoken to a number of backpackers travelling along the Croatian coast in the opposite direction to ourselves. Possibly the definition of picturesque, but swarming with tourists, and the latter fact not quite enough to make the city worth bypassing. I'd recommend to anyone else thinking of visiting to definitely make the trip, but steer clear of June to August. It is indeed a beautiful city in a spectacular location, but too many voices around us from back home, and, unlike Split, not too many of the local populace about, so it comes across as one large tourist attraction.
Croatia - the end!
But a quick hostel dorm-mate review, Hostel Villa Valjalo (with swimming pool!): some unexpectedly excellent additions to the nationalities spotters guide, including a couple of Ukranian girls, a Brazilian guy and a multilingual, Estonian born, half Swedish, half Finnish girl. Might hang onto her as a kind of joker card, and just see who we bump into in the future by way of Swedes, Finns and Estonians. First night was a disporportionate number of travellers who fit the profile of smug, self adoring trendies, who repeatedly refer to countries they've "done" but don't actually seem to enjoy the experiences of being in them (these were Germans, French-Canadians and an Aussie), but much better after that, nice, very mixed bunch.
