Tales From The Far Side
I have now been in Miami for 6 days and it has all gone very quickly. The city is like no other. I am staying in a region called South Beach which is on a long island connected to the mainland by several long causeways. The heart of South Beach is Ocean Drive, a long slow strecth of beachfront road with a beautiful beach on one side and art deco, neon lit restaurants and bars on the other. By day people play volleyball on the beach and skate down the promendade whilst at night locals cruise up and down in corvettes and hummers.
I have spent most of my time strolling around getting used to being on the road. Evertything takes a little longer than on a comfortable holiday as i have to secure all my possessions and hunt for bargains when eating. However this made up for by the people I have met so far. Many of those staying in hostels are recent immigrants to Miami Beach from Los Angeles, New York or somewhere smaller. All are looking for work i the bars, restaurants and clubs, where big tipping vsitors can earn them hundreds of dollars a night- if they are good enough!
One such skillful waiter was a roomate of mine in teh first hostel stayed in. Thak\nks to his contacts I managed to get into a private party in one of the clubs. Turned out Tommy Lee was there - not that I recognised him (ex of Pamela Anderson for those not in the know)!
Recently I haev been on a city tour and a qick trip to the Everglades. Riht now I am preparing to travel to Los Angeles tomorrow morning. I will hopefully get a couple of hours on the beach before I leave. Already I am getting a feeling I know I will get many times again before I return to the UK, I don't want to leave! However I must move on. South Beach is a playground - for a poor traveller like me as much as a movie producer or a rock star but not a place where many stay for long.
