We set off from Streaky Bay pretty early so that we could get to Port Lincoln early enough to get our bearings. We were scheduled into do a Cage Dive off the Neptune Islands which is 40k's off the coast of Port Lincoln.
The night before the cage dive we got an early night as we had to be up at 5.30 to get to the boat. The boat left at 7 but we had to get showered and actually find out where we were going. It was only a small boat, about 40ft but it was really nice inside, they cooked us breakfast and then morning tea as well. Aparently it was a really calm day but it was pretty damn rough in my books. Loads of people were chucking up into buckets. They actually kept the buckets of chunder as burly to feed the sharks, the smell was horrendous.
When we got to the islands we saw loads of seals in the water and then we were given the safety briefing, basically stay in the cage and keep your limbs inside at all times. I was really scared, more excited. The captain got the water ready with the buckets of vomit, the tuna oil and of course the chum, which is basically ground up intestines and other things left over from when they gut the tuna! it was truely rank!
We were the first group in the water and we were sent downstairs to get changed, as we were donig this the first shark showed up. it was massive, apparently 4.5m. it looked monstorous! The cage was opened and then we all jumped in. It was beautifully clear underwater and you could really get some good shots. The sharks were even bigger underwater.
The captain basically threw a bit of tuna on a bit of rope over the top of the cage and then dragged it towards the cage with the shark in tow. The shark wouldn't always get the cage but would get his teeth around the side of the cage instead. It was really quite surreal being about 2 inches away from the jaws of a Great White.
All in all it was a really nice day out with some really good memories. That night we got back into the car and started heading up to Adelaide. We drove till about midnight which was pretty good to say we had been up since 5.30. We found a truck park on the side ot the road and parked there for the night before heading off again in the morning. Total drive was about 700k's which we did in just under 7 hours so that was pretty good going.
