We arrived in Buenos Aires on Sunday 29th June. We spent the first few days getting used to he city and looking around. It also consisted on our first English breakfast that was definitely not what we are used to and we most definitely will not be trying one again!
On Wednesday (02/07/08) we booked a walking tour tour through the hostel. The first stop was the oldest church in Buenos Aires and one of the oldest in Argentina. It was a lovely white building and when we looked inside it was beautiful. Apparently the waiting list is huge to have any type of service there.
We then walked to Cementerio De La Rocoleta. Here the elite of Argentina are buried and the graves are spectacular. They are more like small houses with a door and steps etc. Our guide showed us the only Irish gentleman's grave in the cemetery which was of course green. We were also shown the most expensive grave which was belonged to a French doctor with a noble prize. The main purpose of our visit was to see Evita's grave. It was an amazing site, the door to her grave covered in flowers. The guide explained a little about Evita and she sounded like an amazing and fascinating lady.
After lunch we were shown a large metal statue in the shape of a flower. It is generated by solar power and opens when the sun rises and closes when the sun sets.
The final stop of the day was a museum. It had a lot of nice pieces in it and was nice to walk around.
We had a bit of a nightmare on the way home and tried to get on the bus but the driver didn't have any change so we got in a taxi and asked for the Millhouse Hostel. After a short drive the taxi pulled up outside The Hilton Hotel which was absolutely stunning but unfortunately not our place of residence so we had to leave and get dropped at the correct place. We were tempted to get out at the Hilton and have a bit of luxury for a night though!!
That night we all went out for tea and found a Chinese that we decided to try hoping it would be like home. We were right and it tasted delicious!!!
On Thursday (03/07/08) we decided to make our own way to La Boca to visit the Boca Juniors stadium and museum.
When we arrived at the stadium we decided to pay for the full tour of the grounds and the museum, We looked around the museum. Jonny enjoying it a lot more than me! Within the museum was a lot of Maradona Memorabilia and showed the trophy's and cups that Boca Juniors had won.
After looking around the museum we we met up with the tour guide and were shown around the stadium. It holds up to 54,000 supporters and only 3000 of these are away fans. The stadium itself looks a little worn and tatty however you could imagine the atmosphere on match days, We were also shown the room were the pres conferences are held as well as Boca's changing room and showers. It was a brilliant tour and well worth it. Afterwards Jonny bought an Argentinian football top.
That afternoon we went back into the City Center and shopped a little. We had a brilliant day.
o4/07/08 - Tonight we went to a tango show. The first part of the night consisted of us being taught how to tango. This was HILARIOUS!!! Jonny had to lead but we were basically stomping around the room and I think I resembled more of an elephant than a dancer! Even though we weren't amazing at it we had a lot of fun.
After the lesson we were taken through to another room were we ate our 3 course dinner that was lovely. Free wine was included so that was a plus!
Then it was time for the professionals to show us how its done. The tango show was fantastic and the dancers were so talented. We had a really good night and were glad we experienced Tango.
The rest of the time in Rio was spent wandering around, walking around the harbour and enjoying the city. We also went to the cinema one afternoon. It was a gamble as we were not sure if the movie would be in English but it was our lucky day and it was.
We decided that we wanted to get out the city for a few days so heading to Puerto Madryn. We will be going back to BA for Jonnys birthday though.
13/07/08 - Our final week on BA started off with Jonny's birthday surprise - The Hilton. It was so nice to have a bit of luxury for a night. Carley had about four baths baths. We watched TV and relaxed. Later that night we got room service and had a lovely 3 course dinner delivered to us. It was delicious. Jonny woke up on his birthday and we had a lovely breakfast. It was a buffet so we ate LOADS. Then unfortunately it was back to the hostel and back to normality. The evening of Jonny's birthday we had arranged to meet up with a few people we had met so far. We went to watch a drum show which is apparently a must do whilst in Buenos Aires. It was amazing, lots of dancing and music. After that we went back to the hostel and had some drinks and went to a club afterwards. In BA nightclubs don't get busy till 2M, Its a very different way of life in Argentina.
The last few days in BA we relax strolled around the streets and ate lots. By the time it came to leave we were ready to move on. BA is a very European city and we would definitely come back for a long weekend at some point.
