Apologies for the eroneous picture in this blog but there seems to be nothing to do in New Delhi... this isn't far from the truth! Katherine still unwell so the furthest we got on the first day was Connaught Place a modern shopping arcade... or at least that's what lonely planet says... its far from that. Will we ever see anything modern in India? I have read a lot about the attrocities of the British in India and this was most certainly evident when I visited the Gandhi musuem yesterday with Maddie (from Laos) and her boyfriend Ian - however, India seems to have gone nowhere since then. Perhaps when we visit Mumbai things will be different. The Gandhi museum all made me realise just how intolerant a lot of Hindus are in this country - Gandhi, a hindu himself was killed by another hindu because he promoted a life of hindus and muslims living side-by-side. We also visited the government buildings built by the British in 1931. I was more surprised to see litter bins around here than anything else!
Just a small aside, we have become increasingly annoyed by the number of beggars in India who only ask white people for money... How racist can you be?!
Oh and has anyone heard about the Indian student who was attacked in Australia - if not thats because its small news... but not in India! I feel like we are back in China with propoganda rife.
And another thing, we bumped into a man the other day who was proud India doesn't have any tax... this of course is a lie, he probably just doesnt pay any... he's proud of his 'free india'. I wonder if he cares about the garbage heap he is living in, or the clenliness of his water, or the state of the roads etc. This was in fact just after our unsavoury incident in Varanasi - I was laughing on the inside!
