We have arrived finally in Suzhou a city built around a network of canals. This is clearly not Venice, but around the old part of town, where we're staying, it's very pretty and full of charm. We've followed The Lonely Planet's recommendation regarding hostels and it has come up trumps... a lovely old hostel, furnished with nice old dark wood throughout, and set in a lovely canal-side location.
The journey here was a bit bizarre I have to say. The bus was a sleeper so was comfortable (it was only 2 hours in any case), but the driver dropped us off by the side of a busy dual carriage in the middle of nowhere! Cheeky b*****! We had to get a taxi to the bus station (to our hostel would have been too pricey) then find a bus to our hostel. So far, negotiating transport is proving tricky...if KC didn't speak Mandarin God only knows where we'd be now!
Staying here for a couple of days before we try to cruise the mighty Yangtze River.

Rick Hi Jon and Casey, I was in Suzhou in June. From memory, the old town is very pretty, with the canals. I stayed just outside a modern shopping area, and have the abiding memory of the football being shown on the ceilings of the walkways. Anyway, enjoy Suzhou, and hope your cruise on to the Yangtze is one to remember - All our Love, Rixk, Ali, Jordan and Charis XXXX
Rick Just seen the photos - you look to be either sitting on a bus, or eating something - The photos of Hangzhou look fantastic
