From Montevede we booked the 'jeep-boat-jeep' transfer (actually a minibus-boat-minibus) to La Fortuna. La Fortuna is a small town built around an active volcano.
We arrived about noon, so decided to spend the afternoon walking to a waterfall. It was only 6km away and we thought it would be a nice stroll, we didn't really take into account how hot it was or how hilly the walk would be. Jolly was so sweaty that most people who drove past in a taxi (the smart ones) would have thought we had already visited and been swimming! Our fingers and hands swelled up with the heat so much that they looked like chubby little sausages. But it was worth it - the waterfall was lovely (and thankfully very refreshing). By the time we got home we were exhausted, so had dinner at a local Soda (restaurant) and had a Casado, which is a traditional dish of meat, rice, beans, veges and salad. It was actually pretty tasty.
On our second day there, we went out for brunch (it was Sunday and we are Kiwis), well as good as a brunch as you can get in Costa Rica, Jolly shaved off his beard and now looks about 14 years old, and we spent the afternoon at Baldi hot springs. Baldi is a beautiful thermal hot springs with over 25 pools of varying temperatures. Since we are here in the low season, we had one of these pools pretty much entirely to ourselves. Included in the ticket price was a buffet dinner. We had read terrible reviews about it, but I tell you what, to two back packers, this buffet was AMAZING - we left very full and happy.
