From La Paz, Isla del Sol (Island of the sun) on Lake Titicaca is about a 3.5 hours bus trip away (including a small river crossing where the bus goes across on a barge and people go across on a ferry). To get to the Isla del Sol, its another 1.5 hours on the worlds slowest boat. Seriously, if we all got oars out I think we would have got there in half the time. It´s the highest attitude lake in the world and is so huge that it sits in both Peru and Bolivia. Once we eventually reached Isla del Sol late in the afternoon we set out to find somewhere to stay in the south side of the island. To say the accommodation is basic was an understatement but we were only booked for 2 nights so we weren't too worried. On the Isla del Sol, there are 2 hikes to the north side of the island - one through the villages and one through the mountains, the idea is to do both of them in one day (we were told this would take about 8 hours). The views were incredible so we were looking forward to it. So that was our plan for the following day, but of course that didn't happen as Jolly got quite sick. This was by far and away the worst place on the whole trip to get sick, we didn't have our big packs with us, the island was primitive (most restaurants only have power in the kitchen and you eat by candlelight), no one spoke a word of English, and worst of all we didn't even have flushing toilets. So we spent the whole day stuck in our room feeling terrible. Trying to get Jolly some medicine was an experience - I'm not sure you can say you have lived until you have tried to explain to a Pharmacist (who doesn't speak a word of English) that you need medication for your boyfriends food poisoning entirely through hand gestures. The next day we packed up and headed back for a full day travelling to La Paz.
