Sabi Sabi day 2
The wake up call came right on time , up we get to prepare for the new day of expectation . We leave the camp at 6.30 and head south ,some talk that a lioness and 2cubs have been in that area. The safari started with what has become the norm a herd of kudu , slowly passed them and along the dry dusty track and from our right a gigantic elephant appeared, he was a bull and it was the biggest we had seen in the park. We stayed and watch him for a while ,we marvelled at the way he used his trunk, then off we went. It wasn't long before there was a southern giraffe, this giraffe is much taller then others that we have seen. The rest of the safari was very slow ,that much so that we didn't see another creature. Back to camp for a couple of hrs to rest or get pampered. Shirley had booked in for the works ,massage and manicure . I stayed in the room and wrote the day before blog .Lunch again was a simple but delicious .
Oh my god it 4.00 , it feels like I just put my head down to snooze but it been over an hour. We off again hoping that this time the elusive lion will appear. Mike is taking us north, looking for them but the first thing we run into is three ,yes three white rhino all males and all different ages. We watch as the bird life clean their skins of ticks , flee and any other rubbish.let go and find lions Abdul says , and off we go , nothing around not a wilder beast or a zebra boring , then a call on the radio, and mike says " got a surprise for you,"two or three minutes later more white rhino , mother, baby and a bull ,the calf was so cue , jumping and charging with his mum great experience.
More driving still nothing ,stop for sundowner ,my favourite part. The weather changed ,strong winds blew our party away, but Mike said that may open the chances of seeing something exciting. We clean up as quickly as possible so that we could see what may be waiting. It didn't take long ,we were now on our way to a sighting of three lioness . We arrived and two other groups were there ,we went right ,the other left , we chose correctly . This was a true African adventure ,driving through the scrub weaving in and out tracking these powerful creatures, who now had the elements in their favour , at times we would run straight over trees ,we could see the lions with the spotlight but our tracker Patrick wanted Mike to keep going forward to get in front of them which would allow for much better shots . Mike followed his direction but as the spotlight went in front of us we could see that path was blocked . As quick as a blink Patrick was pointing Mike to a new path ,still zig zagging through the scrubs till finally Patrick pointed over to his left.and there to our surprise were two of the lions just behind us. They started to walk parallel to the jeep and we went with them , then they just stopped and lay down ,we were now so close it was a wee bit frightening as we couldn't keep the spotlight on them all and in the dark we didn't know exactly what they were doing . We spent close to 15 minutes quietly watching taking photos , then we left them to go about their resting before the hunt.
On our way out of the scrub we came across another party in trouble, they were bogged in sand, our driver and tracker gave them some advise and within seconds they were out and on their way.
Shirley and I arrived back at camp, showered and then went to dinner,we were in such a rush that I forgot the ipad. Dinner was to be served in the wine cellar , there were wines from all the finest wineries in South Africa and it was just the two of us. The menu was something you don't see every day ,Impala , qual ,blisbuk, prawns gnocchi and a dessert which was a orange scouffle , I have a photo of all menus from arrival till present and they'll be in the respective albums.
Tomorrow ends one of the best experiences I have had ,adventure fun and good wine and food. We have a morning safari than that it goodbye Sabi Sabi
Until the next blog
Luv Shirley & John.
