We were up before the sun today to get ready for an early start in Athens. After getting off the boat in Piraeus not knowing what we were going to do on our little shore excursion, and being told that all the taxi drivers were on strike we didn't know we would get there. Luckily the ancient muses had a plan for us. They just happen to put up a big sign for a hop on/hop off bus tour all through Piraeus into and around Athens. Hopping on we listened to some fun facts and were soon up at the Acropolis. It was amazing up there. You have to be careful though as the marble on the walkways has been finely polished and it is very slippery. We got some great pictures in the blazing sun.
We got some great coffee and got back on the bus and rode all around the city. There was definite evidence some drama had been going down. There were giant paint splatters on some of the buildings like there was a paint balloon fight and there was a ton of graffiti all over the place.
We hopped bak off the bus so we could walk through the plaka and found a little restaurant to eat at. Got a gyro plate and a kabob plate. The gyro was just blah but the kabobs were delicious.
We didn't really like any of the stuff we saw around town but it was fun walking through the s*** shops. There's a lot of erotic themed stuff in Greece. A lot more than I thought there would be. We made it through all the cockabaloo to where we needed to get on the bus to get back to the boat. We had a few minutes to spare and spotted a yogurt stand so we went to check it out. The yogurt was the bomb! They made us these shakes with some local spirits in them. So good!! We also bought a little bottle of cinnamon liquor and a bottle of a local brew.
Back on the boat we went for a swim then opened some wine and some more wine and the beer we got in Athens then went o dinner. The restaurant on the boat had an amazing special. It was lamb kabobs over these cheese filled pastries. It was so good!! We ended the night watching more movies.
Athens was fun. I would go back mainly because I think a few more days would have been beneficial to really getting to know and enjoy the city.
