My first solo trip!!!!
So after and early start at the bus station and a 3hr journey north west I arrived at Kanchanaburi (close to the Burmese boarder), an area where lots of POW were brought by the Japanese to build railways. Found a place to stay and off I went to see tigers - a rescue centre for abandoned tigers run by monks. Failing to pick up a map as I went in I used my initiative and slyly followed some Austrian guys…it wasn't until I found myself in the middle of building work that I figured they didn't have a map either!! Eventually I found the tigers…lots of them! Grrrrr! Feeding time was carnage whereby every type of animal possible appeared for any scraps they could get!
Early start for an action-packed day trip around the area. First stop Soi Yok Noi…another less than impressive waterfall (although I now know that 'noi' means small!!) A chill out in the hot springs (which, I might add, removed any remaining tan I still had!) Then on to 'Hellfire Pass' and a memorial museum - this was an area dug out by the POW through sheer rockface. Spending time here totally educated me on Japan's involvement in the war or any of the suffering that went on in this part of the country (and these museum's were a million times more interesting than Normandy!) On to the Krasae Cave followed by a trainride over the 'Death Railway' before heading to the Bridge over The River Kwai…all in all a very educational and interesting day! Met up with my new friend William - who had temporarily 'misplaced' his key (I decided it was probably a good job we weren't travelling on together!) Had an evening of beers and Wii…all good!
My journey back to Bangkok the folowing day amused me greatly as I was sat next to a Thai man who twitched more than me in his sleep!
