So, the bus journey from Phnom Phen to Siem Reap has to be my sole worst experience of my entire trip so far. So we arrived late so got the back row seats, which was fine until a sick family got on, smelling of TCP and carrying boxes of medication. She sat next to me and proceeded to spread out, put feet on seats, keep making contact with me, couhed, splutered, gagged, heaved etc (I'm sure you're geting the picture!) This was worsened further by a girl sitting diagonally opposite who kept being sick into a bag (which she left hanging when she left the bus part wy through the journey!) As you can imagine, litle sleep was had on that journey!
Arriving in Siem Reap we wasted no time and went and saw sunset at one of the rocks. A beautiful location completely spoilt by the millions of tourists who had also swarmed to see sundown. We took a look but didn't hang round. The evening ws finished off with the most beautiful traditional Cambodian meal in a lovely location. A wonder round the night market (one of the best I've been to) before a night-cap.
27/9 - Ankor Temples
So when the alarm goes off at 4.30am it's for a good reason, even if it doesn't feel like it! Sunrise at Ankor Wat. Again surrounded by hundreds of tourists but this time it wasn't so bad. We sat and admired the amazing scenery and reflected on how few times in your life you would find youself in a location such as this experiencing such things. A refule for breakfast before tackling the Wat. The detail and complexity of such buildings amazed me, considering it's age. The day consisted of many peaks and troughs of exhustion, but the complexity of some of the buildings were enough to pick me up. We looked, we climbed up, down, over and on many Wats and rocks, and as the day went on and we went further away from the main Wats, the crowds became less and less which was nice. It did mean, however, that we were the sole focus of the kids selling things, which, in my sleep-deprived state began to irritate me..until Cole and I found some fun games to play to get rid of them! A power-nap before hitting Siem Reap for the last time. Street food dinner followed by more spending at the market followed by the Ankor What? Bar. Here we bumped into a couple who we'd seen at Ankor Wat, so had a few drinks and lots of banter...all good fun! Spending the last few days with Cole and meting other english speaking people gave me a chance to toally chill out and enjoy banter and talk s***e which is actualy understood (on the most part!) ...I wonder what nationality of friends I'll meet on the next part of my adventures!?
28/9 - Bus to BKK
Unless you fly, there's no nice way back to Bangkok, so we prepared ourselves for a rough ride. The main route is a dirt track, filled with rocks, pot-holes borken bridges and lots of diversions (these are man made dams acros the river), which all made for an interesting ride. A walk accros the boarder, folowed by a 3hr wait for a bus then another 5hr bus ride back to the Kho San Rd, where I slept the best night's sleep in a very long time. For me, despite the hours of travelling, discomfort and waiting around, this was a beter experience than my previous bus ride! Said goodbye to Cole the following day after 5days of fun, banter, abuse and adventure!
