Halloween in Vegas started today with us going on a Hoover Dam tour. What an amazing place that was and all done with the modern conveniences of today. Officially 96 people lost their lives at Hoover Dam but unofficially it was alot more. What the records show is the 96 who lost their lives were people who died at Hoover Dam so if they were near fatally injured and died at or on the way to hospital they were not counted as a death so you can only imagine what the real total would be. Most of the deaths were from carbon monoxide poisoning from working underground in the tunnels with vehicles constantly in there also. Another probably morbid fact about the Hoover Dam is that there are approximately 20 suicides there a year. The Hoover Dam is built on the border of Nevada and Arizona and one story of a suicide is that it took a coroner a few hours to get out to the scene (apparently the body cannot be moved until a coroner has been there) and when he arrived said he could not do anything because the person was on the wrong side of the border and they had to get a coroner from the other state, all the while tourists were still visiting. Many large landmarks like that have a history like this i.e Golden Gate Bridge, Empire State Building, very sad indeed. Anyway for some reason I have started to build up a bit of a fear of heights and it was a bit scary looking over the edge............lol a bit silly I know but it is a long way down. During the building of the dam work went on 24/7 for the 4 or so years it took to build. The only time work stopped was when a little mascot dog (was found during construction) was accidently run over and the workers stopped to dig a grave. Today there is a monument and the grave still there for the dog, what a lovely gesture. The visit to the dam also included going down in the elevator to see some of the workings inside. It's pretty freaky being that far underground and at one point being in the underground tunnel. So after taking some great pics and finding out so much we headed back to Vegas.
Tonight is Halloween night and what an awesome night. The strip was packed with people and all the people who were dressed up in costume was brilliant. It was such a happy and social night and we had a great time. I love Halloween and am looking forward to having a Halloween party sometime.
