We arrived, bleary eyed into Nazca at 4am this morning with one thing on our minds - lines.
We were lucky enough to find a tour company that offered flights over the lines but was also connected to a hostel - so we went back there to wake up, wash, have breakfast etc before taking an 8am flight over the Nazca lines.
For anyone who doesn´t know, the Nasca lines are a series of lines and giant pictures drawn in the sands of the desert near Nazca. They are only visible by air and were therefore not discovered until the 1930s, and nobody is really sure of there purpose, although theories abound.
Our trip was in a tiny 6 seat Cessna aircraft, flying only a couple of hundred metres over the desert and, apart from being vaguely vomit-inducing, it was spectacular. The sheer size of the lines, their complexity and the number of them are intriguing and the views from the plane were awesome.
Once back on solid ground we headed into the town of Nazca. Although pretty tiny it has a really friendly atmosphere and plenty of sunshine. It is also surrounded by mountains and the Cerro Blanco, the highest sand dune in the world. We considered sandboarding in the afternoon (essentially the same as snowboarding but on the dune) but decided that that would take too much effort so we spent the afternoon lazing by the pool of the Nazca lines hotel.
And then onto another bus to Arequipa this evening. Not sure two night buses in a row is a good idea, but we need to keep moving forwards if we are to have any hope of getting to Brazil in time.
