Joanna's travels
Unsurprisingly, our final morning dawned with glorious blue skies and the sun shining on all the freshly fallen snow atop the mountain! It was hard to believe the difference in conditions from just 24 hours previously. Once we had finished breakfast, all the porters (who numbered about 60 in total) gathered round and gave us two choruses of traditional African songs. It was actually quite emotional saying goodbye to them all, they had supplied warm water for washing, brought mugs of sweet tea to our tents first thing in the morning, served us enormous portions of food each mealtime, carrying our rucksacks between camps, not to mention all the unseen ways in which they contributed to the smooth running of the trip. And of course, they taught us random Swahili - like how to say "as cool as a banana"!! From there, we only had one way to go, and that was down, a descent of about 2,000m from the Millennium Camp to Mweka Gate and then out of the National Park. I think by the end of that hike, everyone was glad of a sit down! And so on to The Lodge. I know everyone was glad to not have to unpack sleeping bags for the final night of the stay, but I don't think anyone was expecting the kind of luxury with which we were greeted, on our arrival at Moivaro Lodge. Being a typical cash strapped backpacker, it is the kind of place I can only dream about. It was absolute heaven!! There were petals on the beds, a swimming pool surrounded by sun loungers, bar with a log fire... It was bliss!! After yet another massive dinner, the drinks were flowing and everyone was in celebratory mood as we retired to the bar to receive our certificates and carry on our celebrations - which continued. By all accounts, late into the night. I retired early - I must be getting old!! The last day of our trip was taken up with a very quick trip to a 'designed for tourists' African village full of overpriced souvenirs, which was a big disappointment (we thought we were going to a market) before we had to leave for the long drive back to Nairobi, to the airport - and to the reality of the Real World.
