Hi All
I think the tourism sites were a tiny bit hard on Luxembourg.Whilst the country could be summed up in four main roads and only one major town, we arrived at the centre to what looked like it could have been quite a good party.I'm still not sure whether they were setting all the marquees and beer tents up, or taking them down, but it was certainly a place where something was happening, but just not whilst we were there. We found out that the next day was their National day, but without the knowledge of a definite party (this was Sunday and the shops were all very closed) we decided to move along. The rest of the country was nice and green - I think we can actually say we saw most of it, not least because we took a wrong turn and looped around a few small villages. It was off to Belgium next and another lottery guess at what the border crossing would be like.In this case it was lanes to go through but with no one on patrol.Oh well, it was Sunday…..but we were in our third country of the day so that seemed cool to us!
The plan here was to camp centrally and work outwards. The Wifi situation here is about as bad as Germany, or maybe France was just the big exception.First stop was Liege, but this was a bit industrious and so we moved on towards Brussels. Now that the weather had picked up we were intent on camping but after hours of searching we only came across one, and there was only one other couple there.Even though we had seen nothing better we moved on - call us camping snobs now but there really has to be a few things in place such as local shops and restaurants etc and this was in the middle of nowhere. We were, however, in Grimbergen which, like most of the villages here, brews it's own beer, and we had been drinking it recently, so at least it has that going for it.It's a shame we didn't get to do the local brewery museum though.
The driving in Belgium is a little different due to the fact that there is only really the motorway routes to do, and no scenic route for us to potter around and see what's to see.It makes stumbling on campsites and places of local interest very difficult, and we have started to move around the country faster than we originally intended. We had to slow down a bit, so headed for Brugge, which was the one place that all of the tourism guides have said not to miss. They weren't wrong. What we found was a lovely little town with many a restaurant and bar.In fact the worst building of the lot was the tourist information building, which is a horrible red brick new build from about 10 years ago. It's definitely somewhere that we'd recommend and somewhere that we'd come back to for a long weekend.Due to the camping and driving we retreated to rather a fancy hotel (with Wifi and parking!) right in the centre of town so have based here for a bit. We've developed a taste for the local beer 'Zot' and been around the brewery, been to the Salvador Dali museum, and done some shopping. It's one of those places where there always seems to be another nook and cranny to discover, which gives us more to do tomorrow!
See you soon
