We landed in Hong Kong just after 10pm and had the difficult task of negotiating our way to Kowloon where our hotel was, it actually proved quite easy to find the bus we needed and 65 minutes later we were at Hung Hom station in Kowloon, although we later found out there was a bus from the airport that went a quicker way and would have taken less than 20 minutes.... oh well it was comfy and fun to see Hong Kong at night!
One of the things we did see as a fellow traveller departed the bus was the swarm of illegal immigrants working in Chung King Mansions practically attack the poor lad attempting to lure him to their hostel.... we had read about this and decided we were too tired to fight our way past people like this so opted for a nicer hotel a bit further away from the main tourist stretch!
Luckily our hotel was less than 2 minutes away from the bus stop and we checked in quite quickly although maneuvering our way into the room itself would prove to be a slightly longer activity.... everybody knows rooms are small in Hong Kong, its written everywhere but this was not a room.... it was more like a cupboard just big enough for two tiny single beds pushed together as that's the only way they would fit in and the bathroom was tucked away through a little sliding door that was so small it gave the impression of a secret hideaway! Surprisingly once in bed... we felt very cosy up on the 21st floor and our beds had a fantastic view through the window of the Hong Kong sky line.
During the day we explored the Kowloon area and had a walk to Nathan Road where all the shops are, there is also men trying to sell you fake watches every two seconds. This is where the famous Chung King Mansions are too so we felt we must see it for ourselves.... the place was as crazy as we had read, immediately we had ten men attempting to talk us into booking their hostel or buy a fake watch or handbag, although the food (mainly Indian) looked amazing from the little market stalls.
As our last stop would be Beijing we needed to book our train tickets so were extremely happy when we discovered Hung Hom station was where the train left from and we had managed to be staying right next to it.... we purchased our tickets for the 15.15 non-stop train arriving at 14.50 the NEXT day into Beijing West, naturally we went for the cheapest bunks which were top (out of 3) hard sleepers! Should be an experience!
Our four days in Hong Kong proved to be a great experience with lovely food, we saw things like the avenue of stars and checked out museums.... at night we witnessed the laser show from the top of the huge skyscrapers. All in all a good place to see on our travels.
Next and final stop Beijing!
