Having picked up the Jucy Crib the day before…… this bright green campervan was to be our home and transportation to Cairns over the next 18 days & nights! Our funky campervan came equipped with a fridge, stove & sink and a very welcome DVD player.
We hit the open road……. Well, after driving around Melbourne for the best part of an hour trying to find our way out of the city we did….. the City Link toll road at $12 was our only escape begrudgingly but we were on our way never the less. The size of the task ahead only became apparent when we noticed our first road sign showing Sydney was a mammoth 870km away and this was only the first leg of our journey!
As reaching Sydney on our first day was going to take too long we decided on settling at a service station just outside of Canberra for our first night’s sleep in the crib which turned out to be a very comfortable….. we cooked a nice pasta dish in our kitchen (see photos) before watching a very questionable Jennifer Love Hewitt movie on our whopping 3.5 inch DVD screen!
Up early to the sound of starting engines from the 18-wheelers which had surrounded us during the night…. Jo decided to embarrass us a little further as if parking a tiny green converted Toyota people carrier in the middle of 20 odd 40+ ton lorries were not enough, out came the teapot, Milo cereal and a fresh banana to finish it off!
Into Canberra for the day….. there is not an awful lot to do in Canberra but being the capital of Australia we felt it would be wrong to miss it off our list of places seen. We checked out a museum and had an enjoyable if lengthy walk around Lake Burley Griffin, it was incredibly hot and I was extremely happy we had a fridge in the camper keeping a bottle of Solo original lemonade beautifully cold. This was pretty much it unless you fancied reading about parliament for the rest of the day so off we went on our drive back to Sydney…….
