Jo's Most Excellent Adventure
In the jungle the mighty jungle the lion sleeps tonight...oh weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee (etc etc) also featuring the "Drama of the Spider in the Klabmoo"
Hey folks, yep it is I the one you love again! And I've just got back from the Jungle!!! Yes that's right the actual real life jungle with all sorts of goodies waiting in store for the unwary traveller, (not me though haha!)
So what have I been up to, well after much chaos and confusion over transport to the Teman Negra National Park aka the Jungle, we got up at 6.30am...again :( and hopped on a nice bus to the Jerantut boat jetty, then from there it was another 3 hours up stream in a long wooden boat that barely rose above the water, needless to say we got a bit wet but the experience was amazing, there were loads of wild water buffalo cooling off in the riverside mud etc, in fact was a dead goood photo opp, but couldn't get camera out for fear of general wetness. So finally we arrive at this rickety old jetty and went to our hostel, managed to blag a huge 4 person chalet with bathroom, fan and mozzy nets for only 40 ringitt a night which works out once more about 1. 75 each. The owners were really friendly and lovely too, again it was a family run business and I'm starting to think this is the way to stay as the commercial one we stayed in in KL just didn't have the same feel. Anyways, Dani and Lyn went off to go and see some tribal people but it was really my thing so I just hung out in the chalet and caught up on my diary, (bad Jo for having too much fun to do it regulary!!!!) Then we had dinner on a floating restaurant in the middle of the river, the food wasn't that great but at least it was fairly cheap and the atmosphere was nice. Then I put on all my layers and almost killed myself with spray, (no mozzy is getting a piece of this young tender flesh oh no) and hopped in the back of a 4x4 to do some off road night jungle safari! Saw loads of things but mostly teeny weeny spotted onyx cats, monitor lizards, sleeping birds of paradise, (sorry too dark for decent pics C) and the bestest thing... a giantic super poisonous bird eating spider! Also saw loads of slow loris and night monkeys which were super cute. Got back at 11pm to find dutch girls screaming in the chalet....turns out we had a visit from a bird eating spider ourselves inside our klabmoo, (dutch word for mozzy net neat huh?). So we had to get the owner and then spent another 2hours checking the rest of the chalet for spider babies etc. Lucky found none but at least got a pic of the spider before it was squished, was super exciting as spider was approx. the size of my hand! Despite the drama, I slept like a log, any remaining spider would have easily had a Jo dinner but was soooo sleepy after all that travelling and general jungle excitement! Next morning up at 7, this time was sooo not super fun but had to go into the jungle early to get max time before heading back to KL. Walked through the jungle to the Canopy walk suspended 50m above the ground...thats right parents all that was between your precious daughter and the ground was a teeny weeny rackety old rope bridge!!! Awesome fun! Was expecting to see lots of birds and monkeys but to be honest I think the walk was a little too touristy and any bird worth his salt would not choose to hang out there! Even so, on the way back we saw jungle squirrels, a flying squirrel, a huge monitor lizard about 5 metres away and a whole gaggle of happy little grey monkeys who tried to poo on us! After general jungle shananigans we managed get on the local bus, (for local people) back to KL....a great idea we thought as it only would cost 12 ringitt....ha ha bloody ha, was nightmare rattler with v limited air con...still must consider it an experience.
After another night at the crappy hostel we originally stayed in, (it was just easier than trekking to find a new one) I managed to blag the last bus ticket to the Cameron Highlands for a desperately needed chill out after KL chaos. Managed to get the bus the next day except in my sleepyness I left behind my Lonely Planet, so must wing it til I get to Penang and can buy a new one. Is most exciting!!!
Bus journey tho took 6 hours as Chinese New Year Traffic was a nightmare. However I am now shacked up in a nice family run hostel, with my 8 ringitt a night bed in the middle of the Tamah Rata the central hill stattion in the highlands, drinking some lovely local green tea and just chilling. After intensive sightseeing with dutch girls is lovely just to do absolutely nothing! The computer here though doesn't upload photos so you'll still have to wait for jungle, KL and Cameron Highland photos. This will probably happen when I get to Pulau Pangkor in probs about 3 to 4 days as am just going to chill out. So if you don't here from me for a while, it's cos I'm sunbathing. Enjoy the english weather!
Ciao for now.
Uber kisses.
