Today was the last day of being in my favorite country thus far. And to add to that sadness we are officially halfway through the voyage…but I know that one day I WILL be back in Greece.
The first day I had a field trip with my favorite teacher (my acting teacher, Drew Kahn) to the ancient Greek theaters of Athens. Needless to say it was phenomenal. Absolutely phenomenal. I can't even describe the emotions that came up. Just thinking about how everything I want to do with my life boiled down to those spaces is breathtaking. It made me want to live up to the space, wanted to be worthy of the experience. Incredibly inspiring. After the theaters, one of my good friends, Lisa, and I went on a mission to get some Gyros. We finally found a place and sat down and had the most amazing meal ever. Not only was the food delicious, but also the owner sat down and had a meal with us, just because. It was so wonderful to talk to a local! He told us some cool Greek history and his own family's history (he is a direct descendant to Pythagoras …ya…super cool) and all about the people of Greece today. Lisa and I ended up staying there for two hours just talking to this guy.
The next morning our ferry to Mykonos was at 7:25 am and it took about 30 min to walk there so I woke up very early. Once we got on the ferry I slept, read, and journaled. Once we got there I didn't have a place to stay so I tagged along with Lisa to the hotel she was at and we figured it all out and I stayed with her and this guy Mike Young, who was someone I met in the Bahamas. I loved every minute of Mykonos. The first day we ended up chilling by the pool at our hotel. Now, I know that that sounds lame, why would I be at the pool when all of Mykonos was out there. But that's just it. Our hotel had an amazing panoramic view of a beach and the white wash buildings. It was beautiful. I met a bunch of cool people that were also staying at our hotel (Jeremy, Tom, Tim, Mike, Sean, Justin, Jamie, Will, Russel, Annsely, and Julia) That night we went out to this bar right on the beach. We danced, hung out, went in the ocean in our clothes. All around a good time. I ended up staying up really late talking and it was just an awesome night.
The next day, Lisa and I rented a quad and had a ball getting lost in Mykonos. We went into town, which was just adorable. Small alleys, white wash, blue doors and stairs, the picturesque Greece. I have some amazing pictures from this trip. That night, for reasons that are so frustrating I don't even want to remember them, Lisa, Mike and I ended up spending the beginning of our evening taking care of a really drunk girl and not going out. This was sort of a blessing in disguise. I went down and told all the boys we went out with yesterday that Lisa and I were going to stay in (Lisa was also getting sick) and Jeremy decided to stay home with us. We ended up having one of those awesome really connecting conversations. It was very refreshing to just stay in and hang out with a really cool guy. We are pretty good friends now.
In the morning we got on the long ferry back to Piraeus, a six hour long ferry. Lots of sleeping. Then once we got back I took yet another nap and then Lyndsi and I headed out to a karaoke bar where a bunch of SASers were all going. So much fun. It wasn't really karaoke as much as it was a giant SAS sing along. We rocked out to some good old Bakstreet Boys etc. It was great.
Altogether I think Greece was my favorite country thus far. I know I have 3 more to go but I think it is safe to say that it will be my favorite on the whole trip.
