Day 57 - Ho Chi Minh City
Our bus that should have taken 12 hours arrived after only 10, a definite first for our trip! The hotel we had booked offered a free pick up service, but they wernt there when we arrived. We got a taxi instead which took about 10 minutes. When we arrived at the hotel they didn't have a record of our reservation even though we had paid a deposit. They told us a room would be available at 12 (it was 6am) and they could give us a crappy room until then, so we agreed and went for a we snooze. When we went back down to speak to them at 12 they told us there were no rooms, and that they would take us to another hotel. So we got our bags and went to get our passports back (in Vietnam all hotels keep your passport while you stay) and he wouldn't give us them. He actually seemed pretty annoyed that we wouldn't agree to leave them. Of course we were definitely not leaving without them, which we told him. Off he went to get them, and instead he came back with a key for a room! We thought that was pretty strange, that before we refused to leave our passports there were no rooms? Anyway, we put our stuff in our room and went out to have lunch. We walked around the corner from our hotel and found the bus stop we had got a taxi from, about a one minute walk away! The taxi driver had obviously just driven around a bit before taking us haha - totally oblivious to bring scammed! It was still only £3. We walked around and found that Ho Chi Minh City was pretty horrible and expensive, so decided to do the things we wanted to do that day and leave in the morning. So we got a taxi to the war remnants museum. We didn't really know much about the Vietnam war, and the signs of it are all over, so we thought we should go and learn. It turned out to be very horrible and sad, I had a tear or two throughout. After the museum we wanted to do a bit of shopping, as we'd heard the city was great for a bargain. I got a new handbag and Michael wanted to get a watch, but he started to feel a little unwell. So we gave up, had dinner and went back to the hotel.
