We landed at Heathrow to be greeted by the friendly, smiling faces of the Harris family. After two long flights of nine hours, we were relieved to finally land on British soil and to be escorted to a warm home with a home cooked meal and a decent bed.
Reality kicked in the next morning when James and I said our goodbyes as I headed north to be reunited with my family. It was strange to wave goodbye to one another, after spending the past 23 months in each other's pockets. On my way to Manchester I was in a contemplative mood...The trip is over.Back to reality. The next chapter of our lives.Where to live.Where to work. What to do.My mood soon lifted when I was greeted at the Arrivals lounge by the Markham clan wearing team t-shirts "Welcome Home Rachel!".
Over the past five weeks we've spent time with family and friends and enjoyed catching up, although the sting of returning to cold, wet, Autumnal England is omnipresent. After a few weeks of enjoying life and the freedom of no work, we knuckled down and started job hunting, James being the first to be snapped up with a three month contract role in London, back to the grindstone.
Some days it feels like we never left. Some things never change and it's wonderful to see this, after all, what would we want to change? The past two years have been remarkable and being back has made us realise how lucky we were to see what we saw, meet who we met and do what we did...and all of this with each other. Before we left we said that the trip would make or break us.We were certainly tested, many times, but the entire experience has been magical and I've shared so much with my best friend and have life long memories to boot.
There are many places we'd both love to revisit, but the world is a big place and life is short, so whether we get the chance we do not know. One of the first on the list will be Argentina, a richly cultural country with great food and wine, people and scenery. We had some of our best adventures here, from ice trekking to wine tasting.
There really are too many places, people and experiences to list as highlights in this final entry. All that's left to say is 'thank you' to family and friends for supporting us on our adventures and taking the time to read the blog, your messages really kept us going when we felt homesick.
For James and I, we have the rest of our lives to look forward to now, to plan our next adventure and build a life together.Who knows what opportunities and experiences await us, we're both excited to find out.As author Mark Twain once said:
"I have found out that there ain't no surer way to find out whether you like people or hate them than to travel with them.
Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness, and many of our people need it sorely on these accounts.Broad, wholesome, charitable views of men and things cannot be acquired by vegetating in one little corner of the earth all one's lifetime.
Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn't do than by the ones you did do.So throw off the bowlines.Sail away from the safe harbour.Catch the trade winds in your sails.
Explore.Dream.Discover."
