Mon 21st
We were dropped off in Yanshuo and arranged with Dan and Lou to meet up at a place called 'The Mojo Bar' - the one bar showing up on 'mapsme'. However, we were dropped off on the wrong road and not at the regular bus stop. Not that we knew that either. Looking at our map from the hostel and 'mapsme', the road curved just the same (it ran parallel with the next/ correct road half a mile away). So we ended up walking in 35°C, with 12 - 17 kg backpacks on ( plus smaller bags), 2km in the wrong direction, wondering why the hell we couldn't find our stay. A German couple tried to help us with directions - should've listened as we wouldn't have gone as far. More vultures stalked us, this time on scooters.
"Taxi? Taxi? Taxi? Where you go?"
Hot, bothered and knowing they wouldn't understand the polite question - 'how the hell are you going to fit the two of us, you, our backpacks which are the size/weight of chunky children and other bags on that poxy scooter luv!?!!!' - We calmly ignored them. This proved hard as, mentioned earlier, they stalked us. I darted into a hotel to ask directions and hopefully shake the vultures off... No joy on either front.
The hotel staff had no clue (or didn't want to help customers not staying there) and one vulture was waiting for outside for us. Frank, downright fed up with this caper gave the guy 'a look' and bared his teeth - dude got the hint. Some relief. It's the fear of the inside of a Chinese jail the keeps one from venting with pure gusto really.
Anyway, down along what seemed like worlds longest/hottest high street. Asking every official we could, then Westerner (rather a few here!) if they knew. One guy had data and said we were 1km away. Some hope.
Up an alleyway we found our Wada Hostel. Inside was Mandy a lovely girl. Didn't quite know what she made of Frank kissing the floor when we walked in but she smiled, welcomed us and apologised for the directions. We all worked out we were dropped at the wrong stop. In our room we de-bagged, showered and changed to met our friends. Mandy recommended some bars for us Bad Panda stuck in my head.
Out the door to find mojo bar (Dan and Lou)... then back to the hostel to double check the route. Found Dan and Lou on the way.
Phew
Dinner in a resturant down a side street. Pizza, french fries and local beer - Liquan.
A stroll along West Street with neon lights, resturants, nightclubs, souvenir shops and bright business brought us a 'Bad Panda rooftop bar' sign - about halfway along West Street. We climbed up four flights of stairs into a small dingy bar, that had a coolness about it. Like it seems to be a lively place when it needs to be. Drinks bought and further up we go, to the roof top.
Wow, what a view. What a view. The town twinkled underneath the spectacular green karst's surrounding us, illuminated by brightly coloured search lights here and there. Bats darted to and fro above our heads while revellers partied below. This is a cool find indeed.
Time wore on so we all headed to Wada Hostel for a night cap. We were up late, gone midnight chatting and relating. Dan and Lou said farewell - they go back to Guilin in the morning.
