Friday morning I went to Mickey Mouse Preschool where I was greeted with a song and dance. I then went into the class of older children to do a colouring activity and helped hand out snack. After snack I played with the younger kids aged 3-4 in the garden. The kids called me "aunty" as that's what they call their teachers which was really cute. They are so happy and constantly smiling its so beautiful to see such genuine happiness.
In the playground a 4 year old girl decided to plait my hair and so I then had 6 little ones gathered around stroking my hair and "helping" to do my hair. A few girls noticed the moles on my arms and asked what they were and also asked about my veins so I did my best at explaining, fortunately they seemed satisfied with the answer I gave and were quickly distracted by my hat which they put on and ran around shouting they were Cowboys. Before we left the teachers all wanted photographs with us and the kids, the teachers then wanted photos with just us so the next 20 minutes were spent posing with different teachers. After escaping the grasp of the teachers and children I headed back home for the evening.
Saturday morning I went into Gweru to buy food to take to the orphanage in Mkoba. I had a quick tour of the house where the 18 kids sleep 2 in a bed with their house mum. She's isn't paid and the orphanage is completely dependent on donations so the volunteers are trying their best to fundraise and donate some money when they can. We all ended up playing Volleyball with the boys at the orphanage and I was mostly on the winning team. The boys were so happy and grateful to have us all come to play with them that we all received massive hugs from all the kids and went on our way.
In the afternoon I went for a cub sit. I finally had my turn at meeting Shaka a four month old male cub. What better way of spending a Saturday afternoon in the sun than playing with a lion cub!
I also had the opportunity to hold the southern African Python that resides at Antelope Park. I was proud of myself for doing it as I was a little nervous, but she was nice to hold very beautiful. It's amazing you can feel the muscles contract as she slithers over my hand and around my neck.
I'm just loving every second of my time here. Everyone is so warm and friendly, I'm practicing my Shona daily and it makes people smile to see me try. I count myself so lucky to have this opportunity to help such beautiful people.
