This morning we went to Julena school which is an hours drive further into the bush. It was an old barn converted into a school as the nearest school was an 11km walk for the children. However, it is still a 7km walk for some children. The school houses 160 children ranging from 4 to 13 years old, split into 8 classes with only 6 teachers.
The school can only be described as a condemned building with gaping holes in the walls and parts of the roof caved in. It is far from safe for anyone to be in let alone children. The scary thing is that wasn't even the worst part. Students have seen black mamba's, one of the worlds most deadliest snakes, living in the building. Through the support of Antelope Park and previous volunteers they were able to build a block of 3 new classrooms where the younger children have been moved to as a priority. But they still need to raise a further $15,000 for a second building for the older children. They have access to clean water from the pump. However, they are in desperate need of proper toilet facilities, classrooms and stationaries to teach the children with. The kids all had rather tatty workbooks which were kept in a room where the snake is believed to be living in. Some children didn't even have a pen or pencil. The teacher wrote on what I think was a blackboard but looked more just like the wall painted black, with no text books or other resources to hand. We came with a big white board, pens and paper and were teaching them times tables and multiplication missing factors.
In English we taught Verbs and Past tense. This school is in desperate need of funding, they all have the right to an education but more importantly they have a right to be safe and healthy.
