Today was a long day we started early as we were going to be walking for 7hours. 4 hours in we arrived at Karanga camp for lunch, I had felt a little nauseous but continued slow and steady and was 2nd into camp. After lunch I was exhausted but continued slow and steady and managed to arrive 2hours before the normal time groups reach Barafu camp. It was a steep walk but didn't find it a struggle. When I arrived the porters were still setting up the tents so my plan for a sleep while waiting for the others didn't quite happen. We had an early dinner and went to bed at 7pm before being woken up at 11pm to start the 6/7 trek to the summit at midnight. I was exhausted my body was in total shutdown, each step I was a battle, my eyes started to close and had some dizzy spells. All I kept thinking was I'm doing this for the kids. Each step I had an inner battle "I can't do it" followed by the next step where I was shouting at myself "I have to do this". The human body is incredible when you think you can't do anything and still your body continues 6hours up 1200m. I have to say a big thank you to Ari and Hussein for taking my bag and for dragging me up the mountain and back down. Ari hugged me and supported me every step of the way, he forced fed me chocolate and ginger tea to give me some energy boost for the hike. It was useless my body was belong exhausted not even chocolate was helping. 6.15am I made it to the peak and decided to push the porter aside who held me upright and ran the last few metres to the sign. I just couldn't believe I did it. I was so relieved and then the others came up and there was hugs and tears galore at what we had all achieved. I couldn't have done it without the support of my fellow hikers, guides and porters. We laughed, sang, rapped, shouted and cried our way to the top!
After having lunch back at the Barafu camp we then had to pack up our things and move to the next camp 2hours walk away where we would spend the night before hiking the next 6hours to the bottom of Mweka gate. Unfortunately not all of us came down together Chris was walked down the mountain immediately after descent due to being unwell and Josh now holds the record for longest summit taking him over 14hours to reach the peak. Before he was stretchered down and treated for exhaustion. We were all relieved when we reached the hotel and found them both alive and well. Once again the family was reunited! This was without doubt the hardest thing I have ever done but the support shown by my fellow hikers and the climbing team was unprecedented. Thank you Tanzania!
