Saturday morning I booked myself onto a tour of the giraffe centre and elephant orphanage both incredible experiences. First I went to the giraffe centre where the famous giraffe manor is situated. I was early so was one of the first to feed these beautiful animals. Stroking their long necks and having hugs and kisses. Sometimes the kisses were a little more than expected...where the pellets I placed in between my lips lacked in size, Eddie the giraffe made up for in tongue length. It's incredible how gentle they are, there tongue taking a tiny pellet smaller than a battery without you feeling it. Well, all you can feel is a giant tongue brush across your face. Don't be mistaken though, if you don't have food you are no friend of these animals, they are incredibly fickle.
Just before 11am I arrive at the David Sheldrick's Elephant and Rhino Orphanage. My guide takes me through to the viewing area. Then 26 baby elephants ranging from 5months to 3 years come out and are given 2 of their many daily bottles. They each have 24litres of milk a day which is spread over the day, every 3 hours.
They ran around rolling in the dirt, showering themselves with dust for protection against sun and insects. They drank the water, occasionally squirting it at the close crowd. The youngest kept very close to the keepers following them around like they were their babies.
