Well hello there from Leipzig Germany and the most amazing weekend EVER!!!!!
I am going to very briefly skip over the first couple of days and get to the music fest... bare with me for a minute... so get to Leipzig on the Tuesday arvo, check into my hostel... 6 bed dorm all to myself... sweet... as I am still recovering from the night before I do some washing, have some dinner, jump into bed and watch a few movies...
Next day I walk around town, buy the Anne frank diaries and sit in a park and read until Maggie gets there in the afternoon. We meet her friend Nina and head to Nina's house... we go do a shop and get our food and booze for the festival... we got back and then went for a walk around Leipzig... After this we packed our bags and called it a night... Nina, Maggie's friend is lovely and it was very kind of her to let me stay there and also leave my camera and laptop at her house.
Ok so now the FUN FUN FUN part... the music fest... Maggie and I take off around 1 and catch the tram to the train station and then the shuttle bus to the music fest... we line up for 2 hours with about 30-40kg on our backs.. This was torture so we set ourselves the rule of no complaining by 4:30 as we figure we should be in by then... until 4:30 of course we complain as much as we can to get it out of our system.. We met up with Frank who Maggie got a lift to Leipzig with... In Germany they have this car sharing thing that is like organised hitchhiking... so when we get in we camp with him and his friends... which I am so glad we did because they are awesome. The group was Elki, Sandra, Peachy, Jules, Mikie, Ela, Jenny, Frank, Maggie and Me... Everyone was so friendly and fun and they all spoke really good English... we set up camp pulled up a chair and cracked open a nice cold Becks... €1 for half litre can of Becks... so about $1.30 aussie.. Absolutely crazy!!! We have a few drinks go for a bit of a wander and get acquainted. The first night is no bands it's like the first night at Pyramid or falls but instead of watching stupid movies on a big screen they throw a big party in the camping area in what they call the "Party Tent" After a few drinks Maggie and I go and check it out for a few hours, we dance to Aussie artists, German artist and everything in between.. A little before 1am we call it a night and head to sleep as the festival hadn't even really started.
The next day we get up and I go get some Pommes (fries) for breakfast... ever since Belgium this has become quite a bad habit that I need to kick... but considering I was slightly hungover today was not the day to do so.. The bands didn't start until 3:30 today and the only band I really knew was one called flogging molly and they weren't until tonight... the weather was a little rainy so Maggie and I play cards in the tent.. She taught me a card game which I have already forgotten... but this amused us for a bit... anyway our marquee broke... shock horror. I don't think I have been to a music festival where our marquee hasn't broke... why we still bother getting them is beyond me... but a couple of the girls went out and got another one.. This one lasts for the rest of the festival. Anyway I go and have a nap and at about 3:30 I wake up... must have been tired... anyway we have a few drinks and head in to the festival area to see a band called Pantheon Roccoco who are a German reggae kind of band I think.. We stay around and watch Flogging Molly dancing and drinking our vodka orange tetra packs. What I forgot to mention earlier is that I locked my phone this morning forgetting the pin... anyway I eventually got it sorted out only have messages and missed calls from the parents, Sarah and couple of others wondering if I was alive.. Apparently a music fest in Belgium got washed out and a few ppl got stuck in a collapsed marquee... anyway clearly I was still alive.
Anyway the last band of the night was this German band called Seed... they are like reggae kind of anyway they were freaking awesome... some songs were English, most were German but they danced... like the three main guys and were just so entertaining... Peter Fox was the main guy and he is very dreamy... do yourself a favour ladies and Google this man... u will not be sorry anyway he had this towel that he carried on stage and Maggie and I were like what's the deal with the towel.. So naturally the curious person I am asked some German guys: what's the deal with Peter Fox's towel? After a bit of back and forth to explain to them what a towel was we found out it's a cool thing to do... haha ok then!! Anyway we got chatting to the Germans and they were 2 brothers, Nico and Lars. Nico had spent some time in Australia a couple of years back so we all got chatting... also me and Maggie were pretending she was Australian as well.. We fooled one guy and then felt so guilty watching him trying so hard to explain German things to her in English... I had to walk away so I didn't spoil it by laughing, so I chatted to Nico and Lars whilst she fooled this guy for a bit longer... at the end of Seed Maggie and I still had some gas left in the tank and decided to hit the party tent up again, Nico and Lars come along and we danced and chatted and the next thing we knew it was past 4am and time for us to get some sleep as there was still 2 days to go aggghhh 4 night festivals are a crazy idea.. All night I had been saying how good thongs are and how they are the best shoe... everyone disagreed and I was very stubborn... I then proceeded to fall and trip about 6 times in a row... this hurt my argument very much.
The next day im up at 11 and everyone at our camp cannot understand how I sleep so long with the noise and heat as today it was HOT HOT HOT!!!! I decided to crack the vodka and OJ early as it was the only way to bounce back... Maggie and I head in early around 2 to check out the only Aussie band on the Bill- Karnivool... I got a little excited when they said they were from Australia... and as I think I was the only Aussie at the festival and drew some unwanted attention to myself... whoops... that's the patriotism in me... after they finish we run into Nico and then go watch a German hip hop band.. After which Maggie and I decide we need a drink top up and back to the camp... Maggie wasn't sure if she wanted to see Yellowcard as she didn't know who they were so we plan on meeting Nico and Lars before they start... we wander back to the tent top up the vodka, notice that we now have a pot plant hanging from the marquee.. A lovely addition we decided... we posed for photos... because it was the cool thing to do then headed back to meet our new friends for Yellowcard... They were AWESOME I love the song Oceans Avenue so I was easily pleased... Maggie wasn't feeling to good so she skipped out early and we planned to meet back in an hour... after yellowcard I hung out with Nico and got some food and then went back to meet Maggie.. However she wasn't there... we had got our wires crossed in a vodka infused state and went to different meeting points... whoops... looks like poor Nico was stuck with the non-German speaking Aussie.. Haha poor guy. We kept an eye out for Maggie all night, we met up with his brother and friends and my new campsite buddies and we watched the Mighty Mighty Bosstones, THE KOOKS!!!!!!!! And 30 seconds to Mars... all of them were awesome... I left Nico and his group to see all of the Kooks as they clashed with the Bosstones by I think 20 mins... we all met back up at the Kooks and in the meantime I partied with some random crazy German guys and girls that were bouncing around like crazy people... good fun... we then watched Jared Leto and 30 seconds bring the night to an end with an awesome performance.. and that was me done... time for some needed sleep...
Another 11am sleep in to my fellow campers amusement once again I slowly get up and Maggie and I go to freshen up as the hangover is a little worse today and the heat is just as bad... we then get ready and head for a non-drunk look at the festival area.. We walk around I get some food and meet more crazy Germans... I call them crazy because I think they love the booze as much as Aussies which is refreshing to see. We then head back to the camp to start back on the booze and meet Peachy back in the festival area as the girls wanted to get front row for Panic at the Disco... Now Panic at the Disco aren't really my cup of tea so I went and checked out the deftones, ran into the boys Nico and Lars, but they were a little too heavy for my mood so I went back to dance with Maggie, Jules, Peachy and Mikie to Panic... they were fun. About half way through I left and went and watched jimmy eat world... Maggie joined me when Panic finished... they played the middle which I was super excited for... after Jimmy we sat and listened to Dropkick Murphy's who are a crazy Irish folk cool band and then bumped into Lars.. Now our meeting spot was the same as theirs this is why we always bumped into them... we went and watched Rise against with them and then Nico showed up as he stayed until the end of Dropkick Murphy's. Part way through we left to go get a good spot for the headliners- The Foo Fighters... Maggie and I got as close as we could without getting squished... they played for nearly 2 and half hours... Dave Grohl is a maniac... by the end of their set Maggie and I headed to the back... covered in sweat and absolutely exhausted from jumping around for over 2 hours... we bumped into the boys again after the set chatted for a bit and then called it a night...
That was highfield done... the next day I ran into Nico on the shuttle bus back Leipzig, we hung out in town for a bit until his train to Berlin... I was meant to go to Budapest but changed my plans... I am now London bound to see Sezza and to stay still for a week!
Highfield was the best 4 days of my life; I met some amazing people who I will hopefully rock out with again one day whether it is back in Germany at another festival or in Australia... I won't forget the craziness and fun me and Maggie had making friends and dancing up a storm and I don't think I will ever be able to go to another Aussie music festival again because to be honest they are just s***house in comparison... This long weekend with all my new German friends has been the highlight of my trip and I am super sad to say goodbye to everyone I met...
Next stop London and some crazy times and chill out with my besty
