Howdy from Denmark...
Last time I left you I had turned the light off my chatty bunk mate and tried to make the most of the 6 hours' sleep we had until we reached a town called Lund... this is where we had to change trains and board one for Copenhagen... This was done pretty easily and I have to admit that at 6am I did buy a coke as it was a restless sleep and I was struggling to function... Anyway we got the train to Copenhagen.
I had learnt from my mistakes in Stockholm and instead of waiting until the overnight train to Germany I booked one at noon which gave me about 5 hours in Denmark's capitol... pretty perfect really.. I'm sure if you were staying here and had friends with you, one could easily spend some time here but as I was only there for a day and had ditched the chatty bunk mate I opted for the midday train. I got my ticket, stored my luggage and headed off again to explore... I had map in hand and worked out the spots I wanted to hit... this was Marys home... the Amalienborg Castle... also the Rosenberg Castle (this was surrounded by a moat.. pretty cool), the kings garden, the Nyhawn which is a canal with beautiful sailboats and colourful houses, the old stock exchange and the Christian Bork Palace.. I set off by foot and train and marked off each place... I am going to say one thing about Europe... one negative thing... they need to learn the beauty of road signs... really... they have them on the buildings but not all of the buildings and their roads are like bloody labyrinths half the time and I stand there looking at the map going "where the hell am I" anyway after assistance from a lovely cyclists at the lights I found my way again and continued ticking things off my hit list.. I saw Marys home... the "castle itself" not so impressive but it's like this big circle area with 4 big houses (castles) surrounding it... this is the castle... there is pics of it as I am aware my explanation is not very good... but even though it's not that impressive the woman still has 4 houses so who's complaining.. Everywhere was really cool and there were gardens and walkways everywhere... I saw this cute little cafe and thought I may have a coffee and scone... I quite liked this idea until I saw the huge dirty rat hanging around the front and I thought ummm fail... I will miss the coffee and scone on second thoughts... I headed back to the station with an hour to spare and got myself sorted out... Denmark was a pretty city (minus the rat of course) and with friends and more time I am sure one could lose themselves in this fairy-tale city for a few days... not me thought I was heading back to Kaarst, Germany to see Maggie again and plan our trek to the Highfields Music Festival.. I board the train... next stop Germany... this is what I love about Europe... One day, 3 countries... and no flying... It's a crazy thought.
